What is AS400 administration?

AS400 administration refers to managing and maintaining IBM's AS400 (now known as IBM iSeries or IBM i) systems. This role involves tasks such as user management, system monitoring, backup and recovery, security configuration, and software installation. AS400 administrators ensure the system runs efficiently, troubleshoot issues, and apply necessary updates. Their expertise is crucial for organizations that rely on AS400 for business-critical applications.

What are some common challenges faced by AS400 administrators, and how can they be managed effectively?

AS400 Administrators often face challenges such as managing legacy hardware, ensuring data security, and coordinating system upgrades with minimal downtime. Staying current with IBM i updates and regularly performing system health checks are crucial for maintaining stability. Additionally, effective communication with developers and end-users helps quickly resolve issues and optimize system performance. Proactive monitoring and thorough documentation are key practices for handling the complexities of AS400 administration.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an AS400 administrator, and why are they important?

To thrive as an AS400 Administrator, you need expertise in IBM iSeries/AS400 systems, operating system management, and backup/recovery procedures, typically supported by a degree in computer science or related experience. Familiarity with tools like IBM Navigator for i, BRMS, and proficiency in CL programming and job scheduling software is essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills make someone stand out in this position. These skills and qualities are crucial for ensuring system reliability, minimizing downtime, and supporting business operations on legacy platforms.
