Job description

Evening Star is looking for an Art Director to help us create our new 3D game! As a member of our art team, you will be responsible for bringing our games to vibrant life by blending your outstanding talents at leading an art team with our proprietary game engine. Our ideal candidate will have a wide range of experience from having extensive knowledge of a variety of 3D art pipelines, as well as managing the art production of 3D open world games with a mix of remote internal and external artists.
Remote working is in our DNA โ€” since our inception in 2018, we have had developers across the U.S., England, and Australia. While we welcome people to join us in our Los Angeles office, this will never be a requirement.

Responsibilities
  • Manage and lead the internal and external team of artists and maintain the art production with the project department leads
  • Establish and maintain the art production pipelines, asset lists, and art delivery schedules
  • Advocate for art production bestโ€‘practices, and ensure highโ€‘quality standards and processes for each milestone deliverable
  • Work in collaboration with the Principal Artist and Game Director to enforce the visual direction and brand of the game across internal and external teams
  • Work with Tech Art, the Art Production Manager, and Engineering to establish asset pipelines and process with Evening Star's proprietary engine, the Retro Engine
  • Conduct routine syncs with teams to ensure alignment across a globally remote team
  • Manage effective, clear communication among team members and partners, not limited to documentation, feedback rounds, project directives, and problem solving
  • Foster a collaborative spirit, working with departments and partners proactively and insightfully
  • Work closely with the Art Production Manager and external partners to ensure onโ€‘time delivery of art assets
Requirements
  • At least 5+ years of experience leading the production of stylized 3D game projects as an Art Director
  • Highly organized and proven leadership with experience in managing teams of creatives and collaborating with other disciplines
  • Deep knowledge of one or more industry standard software used in 3D asset creation (e.g. Blender, Maya, Photoshop, Zbrush, Substance Painter/Designer, etc.)
  • A strong portfolio showcasing recent professional or personal work
  • A deep understanding of 3D environment, 3D character, UI, and VFX art pipelines
  • Expert knowledge of game development production pipelines
  • Must be comfortable with GitHub, Perforce, or other comparable version control systems
Pluses
  • Experience working with midโ€‘sized global game dev teams and outsourcing vendors
  • Knowledge of Unity3D, Unreal, Godot, or other game engines
  • Exercises sensibilities towards cohesive gameplay and player experience
  • Proficiency in Japanese
Benefits
  • Remote working for all employees with the opportunity for LAโ€‘based employees to collaborate inโ€‘office
  • 3+ weeks of PTO within the first year
  • 2 weeks holiday time off at the end of every year
  • Unlimited sick days
  • Full employee medical, vision, and dental insurance
  • 401(k) with Employer Matching
  • Paid Maternity and Paternity Leave
Equal Opportunity Statement

Evening Star is an equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, national origin, protected veteran status, disability, or any other basis protected by applicable law.
