Accounting Specialist 2 (Accts Payable/Payroll)

Salary: $21.63 to $24.52/hour Grade: 18
The Arizona State Retirement System is currently seeking an Accounting Specialist 2, (Accounts Payable and Payroll Specialist). The Accounting Specialist 2 is responsible for the day-to-day processing of various accounting functions, including invoice, payroll and travel reimbursements. This position ensures that daily general accounting operations run smoothly, in accordance with state and agency policies and procedures. This position works in the office Monday through Friday and has flexible start and end hours.
Job Duties:
  • Processes agency transfers, AZ360 transactions and deposits for processing by the State Treasurer.
  • Receives, reviews and routes invoices in ERP accounting software for approval.
  • Processes and monitors payroll and related adjustments in HRIS.
  • Daily cash receipts
  • Develops and maintains spreadsheets and databases used for reconciliations.
  • Reviews, codes and processes employee travel claims.
  • Initiates wire transfers for payment to vendors and the State.
  • Researches and assists with vendor inquiries.
  • Sorts, data captures, runs reports and processes deposits.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):
  • Knowledge of the principles, concepts, practices and methods of government accounting and fiscal control.
  • Knowledge of the rules and regulations of data processing as it applies to accounting practices; plus state rules and policies as they pertain to employee travel, statewide accounting and the state automated financial system (AZ360).
  • Skill in multi-tasking within the areas of accounts payable, payroll and general accounting functions. Must have excellent time management and work organization.
  • Skill in accurately computing, coding, matching, batching and balancing source documents.
  • Skill in providing excellent customer service and maintaining positive interpersonal relationships.
  • Have the ability to maintain confidentiality and safeguard information.
  • Have the ability to use Access, Word, Excel and Google applications efficiently.

Selective Preference(s):
The ideal candidate will have these preferred characteristics:
  • AZ360 experience
  • Two years accounting experience plus an Associate degree. Additional years of accounting experience related to the industry may substitute for a degree.

  • Candidates selected for hire will be subject to a background investigation to include credit and criminal history.
  • All newly hired State employees are subject to and must successfully complete the Electronic Employment Eligibility Verification Program (E-Verify).
