The US base salary range for this full-time position is $145,000- $150,000 based on level of experience plus discretionary bonus

Role and Responsibilities Overview  

TheArea Director is responsible foroverseeing operations, compliance, and performance across a portfolio of affordable or mixed-income multifamily communities. This role ensures consistency in execution, regulatory adherence, and leadership standards across multiple sites while serving as a key partner toRegionalleadership. 

You will directly support and guideproperty level employees, ensuringassetsare well-run, audit-ready, financially disciplined, anddeliveringa strongresident experience. Success in this roleincludesfewerescalations, stronger site leadership, improved compliance outcomes, and communities thatoperatesmoothly atscale. 

This role is ideal for a seasoned affordable housing leader who thrives in the field, balances accountability with coaching, and understands how to translate strategy into day-to-day execution across multiple properties. 

Portfolio Operations & Performance 

  • Oversee daily operations across a portfolio of affordable housing communities 
  • Ensure consistent execution of company standards, policies, and procedures 
  • Monitor occupancy, collections, maintenance performance, and resident satisfaction 
  • Identifyoperational risks and implement corrective action plans proactively 

Financial & Asset Support 

  • Review and support property budgets, forecasts, and variance explanations 
  • Partner with Regional leadership on expense control, capital planning, and performance improvement initiatives 
  • Monitor financial trends across the portfolio and flag risks or opportunities 

Compliance & Regulatory Oversight 

  • Ensure compliance with HUD, LIHTC, Fair Housing, Section 504, and applicable state and local regulations 
  • Partner with compliance teams to support audits, file reviews, and inspections 
  • Ensure Community Managersmaintainaudit-ready files and documentation 
  • Serve as an escalation point for complex compliance or resident issues 

People Leadership & Development 

  • Directly manage and coach Community Managers and site leadership 
  • Support hiring, onboarding, performance management, and development planning 
  • Drive accountability while fostering engagement and retention 
  • Model strong leadership presence and professionalism across properties 

Stakeholder & Cross-Functional Partnership 

  • Act as a liaison between site teams, compliance, maintenance, accounting, and senior leadership 
  • Support communication with ownership groups and regulatory agencies as needed 
  • Represent the organization professionally in the field at all times 

Qualifications 

  • Demonstrated success overseeingmultiple affordable or regulated housing communities 
  • Strong working knowledge of HUD, LIHTC, Fair Housing, and NYC-specific housing requirements 
  • Proven ability to lead, coach, and hold Community Managers accountable 
  • Strong operational judgment and comfort managing escalations 
  • Financial acumen related to property operations and portfolio performance 
  • Clear, confident communication skills across diverse stakeholders 

Education & Experience: 

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required;Bachelor'sdegree preferred 
  • 7+ years of multifamily property management experience, including affordable housing 
  • Prior experience as aRegional/Area-level leaderrequired 
  • Familiarity with property management systems (e.g.,Yardi, RealPage) 
  • New York Real Estate License preferred or willingness to obtain
