What is architectural production?

Architectural production refers to the process of turning architectural designs and concepts into detailed drawings, documents, and specifications that can be used for construction. This work typically involves using software like AutoCAD or Revit to create technical plans, elevations, sections, and schedules. Professionals in architectural production ensure that designs meet building codes, client requirements, and industry standards, serving as a bridge between the creative design phase and the actual building process.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in architectural production?

To excel in Architectural Production, you need strong drafting skills, knowledge of building codes, and typically a degree in architecture or a related field. Familiarity with CAD software (such as AutoCAD or Revit), 3D modeling tools, and project management platforms is essential. Attention to detail, teamwork, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for collaborating with architects, engineers, and clients. These competencies ensure accurate project documentation, efficient workflows, and successful project delivery within industry standards.

What are some common challenges faced in an architectural production role, and how can they be managed effectively?

Architectural Production professionals often encounter challenges such as tight project deadlines, coordinating with multiple stakeholders, and ensuring accuracy in construction documents. Managing these challenges effectively involves strong organizational skills, clear communication with design teams and consultants, and proficiency with industry-standard software like AutoCAD and Revit. Regular team meetings and thorough quality checks also help minimize errors and keep projects on track, contributing to a smoother workflow and successful project delivery.

Job description

**Purpose of the role

**Owns the production drawing set for a small-to-mid project or a defined package on a large one. Works with limited supervision and catches errors before the PA does.

Key responsibilities

  • Develop complete construction document sets from design development through issue for permit and bid.
  • Coordinate the architectural model against structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and civil models; identify and log clashes.
  • Produce door, window, room finish, and equipment schedules; keep them synchronized with the model.
  • Draft complex details — wall sections, stair and elevator sections, roof transitions, curtain wall head/sill/jamb, waterproofing terminations.
  • Support code review documentation: occupancy and egress plans, life safety plans, fire and smoke rated assembly tagging with correct UL designations.
  • Manage consultant background files and issue coordination sets.
  • Mentor Level I drafters on standards and technique.
  • Assist with construction administration: process submittals into the record set, draft sketches (ASKs) and bulletin drawings.

Required qualifications

  • 3–6 years of architectural production experience in a design firm or design-build environment.
  • Advanced Revit and AutoCAD — families, parameters, phasing, work-sharing, view templates, shared coordinates.
  • Solid grasp of building code fundamentals, ADA clearances, and rated assembly requirements.
  • Ability to work directly from consultant redlines and field-verified conditions.

Preferred

  • Custom Revit family creation; Dynamo exposure.
  • Field experience or construction background.
  • Experience with local Norman / Cleveland County and City of OKC permitting submittals.

You should be proficient in:

  • ADA clearance
  • Architectural Production
  • AutoCAD
  • Design firm
  • Dynamo
  • Revit
