The overall function of this position is to maintain, repair and overhaul all types of equipment including heavy mobile equipment or complex mechanical systems on mobile equipment. This position is located in District 02 of the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development and reports directly to Mobile Equipment Shop Superintendent. The incumbent must be self-motivated and be able to perform duties many times with or with minimal supervision and also be able to interpret unforeseen conditions as they may arise. The incumbent will participate in appropriate DOTD structured training programs as appropriate and attend all continuing education classes and conferences deemed necessary to facilitate the performance of required tasks.

Job Duties and Other Information
Job Duties:
  • Diagnose, overhaul and repair all automotive systems including: (electrical, computer, electronic, brake, fuel injection, a/c cooling, heating, etc.) by applying knowledge of how these systems function for automobiles, trucks, street sweepers, aerial bucket trucks, lawn care equipment, and other mechanical equipment which have gas and diesel engines. Performs final tune-ups. Also measures fuel tank and oil drum levels for inventory purposes.

  • Locates and traces defects and causes of malfunctions through audible and visual inspections, utilizes a wide range of test equipment such as engine analyzers, dynamometers, exhaust analyzers, vacuum testers, ignition timers, dwell meters, test stands, exhaust analyzers, oscilloscope, compression gauges, special feeder and dial gauges in order to determine the nature and extent of repairs required. Reviews all technical manuals, in book or computerized form, to perform jobs in a timely manner. Insures that all safety procedures are enforced.

  • Disassemble and rebuilds components and assemblies by fitting and installing needed parts such as pistons, rings, hearings and gears. Rebuilds front end. Aligns meshes and connects repaired units to related mechanisms (engine and related clutch, transmission mechanism, etc.). Uses grinding and seating equipment, clutch pilot, gear pulling tools and common hand tools.

  • Provides instruction and assistance to less experienced mechanics when they encounter issues during repair of work. Prepares paperwork for daily work reports, parts orders, inspection forms etc. Responsible for the cleanup of the mechanic shop and work area.

Career Progression: As part of a Career Progression Group, vacancies may be filled from this recruitment as a Trades Apprentice or Mechanic 1-3depending on the level of experience of the selected applicant(s). The maximum salary for the Mechanic 3 is $3,649.00.
