The primary teaching assignment involves instructing lecture and laboratory courses within the American Sign Language (ASL) discipline. These courses cover the first two years of instruction in American Sign Language, as well as an introduction to Deaf Cultures. They are transferable to the four-year university and lead to an Associate's Degree of Arts in American Sign Language and Deaf Studies.
This assignment also includes curriculum development, specifically in the development of ASL-English Interpreting courses. Furthermore, it includes participation in the shared governance process through work in normal professional activities, committee work, student activities, and professional development, as well as helping supervise the ASL-Deaf Studies program. DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: Master's Degree or PhD in the related areas of Sign Language Linguistics, Sign Language Interpreting, Translation Studies, Deaf Studies, or a related discipline. Fluency in ASL as demonstrated by a minimum score of 4.0 on the ASL Proficiency Interview (ASLPI) and/or SLPI: ASL rating of Advanced Plus, or equivalent assessment. Recent experience teaching ASL and/or ASL-Interpreting at the college level
Evidence of an ability to address and adapt to the instructional needs of varying student levels, using a variety of culturally relevant and responsive teaching strategies to encourage retention and student success. Demonstrated excellence in teaching using different modalities, including asynchronous and hybrid courses, and competency with technology conducive to lab instruction. Evidence of innovation, scholarship, or leadership in the teaching of American Sign Language at the community college or university level.
Membership in American Sign Language Teachers Association (ASLTA), Conference of Interpreters Trainers (CIT) or Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID). Desire and demonstrated ability to participate actively in department, division, and college committees, and in the participatory governance of Long Beach City College. Competencies related to: curriculum and course development; teaching and learning, assessing and evaluating student learning outcomes; and program planning including budgets and grant writing experience.
