How does an AI Operations professional typically collaborate with data scientists and IT teams?

AI Operations professionals often act as a bridge between data science teams, who develop machine learning models, and IT teams, who manage infrastructure. They work closely to ensure models are deployed smoothly, monitored for performance, and integrated into production environments. Regular communication and troubleshooting are essential, as AI Ops professionals must understand both the technical requirements of the models and the operational constraints of the systems. This collaborative approach helps maintain reliability and scalability of AI solutions in a business setting.

What do AI operations do?

AI operations involve managing and maintaining AI systems to ensure their reliable performance, including tasks like deploying models, monitoring system health, troubleshooting issues, and optimizing workflows. Professionals in this field often use tools such as cloud platforms and automation scripts to support AI infrastructure and may require knowledge of machine learning, data management, and scripting languages.

What is AI Operations?

AI Operations, often referred to as AIOps, is the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies to automate and enhance IT operations. It involves analyzing large volumes of data generated by IT systems to detect issues, predict outages, and automate responses. AIOps helps organizations improve efficiency, reduce downtime, and quickly resolve problems by providing actionable insights and automating repetitive tasks. This approach is increasingly important as IT environments become more complex and data-driven.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an AI Operations professional, and why are they important?

To thrive in AI Operations, you need a strong background in computer science, data analytics, and machine learning, often supported by a degree in a related field. Familiarity with tools like Python, TensorFlow, cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure), and experience with AI/ML monitoring systems is essential. Critical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication are key soft skills for managing incidents and collaborating with cross-functional teams. These skills ensure the smooth deployment, monitoring, and optimization of AI systems, which are vital for operational reliability and business success.

What is the difference between Ai Operations vs Data Scientist?

AspectAi OperationsData Scientist

AI Operations Lead

Abacum Inc

Job description

About Abacum
Abacum is the leading Business Planning solution for finance teams to drive performance. By automating reporting, enabling collaboration, and simplifying planning and forecasting, we help finance teams shift from number crunching to driving strategic decisions.
Founded in 2020 by two former CFOs, we've grown into a global team of 100+ people across 30+ nationalities. Headquartered in New York, we have offices in Toronto and Barcelona. We're trusted by industry leaders such as Dish Networks, Strava, BetterUp, Kajabi, JG Wentworth, Abridge, Cortex, and hundreds more.
We have raised over $100m, closing in June 2025 our $60M Series B, led by Scale Venture Partners, with the strong participation of Cathay Innovation, Y Combinator, Atomico, Creandum, and angel operators from Adyen, Zapier, and Twitch.
Our mission is ambitious and we can't do it alone - join Abacum as we build the future of Business Planning!
The Role
You'll spend real time on both sides of AI transformation here: streamlining processes with AI-powered workflows, and making sure the rest of Abacum can actually run with AI day to day. One day you're building an agent that saves a team hours of manual work. The next you're in a room turning a skeptical function into believers, or figuring out what "good with AI" should look like for a team that's never had the chance to learn.
You'll work closely with our technical AI Transformation Lead to build the foundation for all of it: a structured AI baseline across every function, org-wide guidelines for how AI shows up in hiring and performance reviews, and the work that builds real AI fluency across the company: tandem sessions, function-specific training, skill repositories, best-practice sharing, and a growing network of AI champions.
What You'll Own
Baseline & foundation: Build and maintain a structured AI baseline across every function detailing where teams stand today, what's blocking adoption, and what "good" looks like next. Feed that into org-wide AI guidelines. Will start with GTM functions and quickly expand to the full business.
AI fluency & enablement: Run tandem sessions and training that cover both AI features within the tools teams already use and general AI skills such as prompting, judgment, best practices for day-to-day work. Help maintain skill repositories, org-wide and function-specific, so training tracks what's actually relevant to each team.
AI workflow design: Build AI-powered workflows and automations yourself that solve real operational problems across the organization. Ship a first version, get feedback, iterate, and know when to move on to the next opportunity.
Rollout enablement: Partner on structured enablement, training and comms, for automations as they ship, so adoption is part of the release, not an afterthought.
Champions network: Grow and support a cross-functional network of AI champions, with a real point of view on where that network should expand next.
Adoption & fluency accountability: Own AI adoption and fluency tracking at the org-capability level over time, both general skill level and adoption of specific shipped work, not just per automation.
How You'll Work
This role sits inside the Strategy & Operations function with a cross-functional remit that touches every function at Abacum. It's the adoption and capability layer of AI transformation, and it sits alongside, not instead of, the technical build work already happening elsewhere in the org. You'll be embedded across teams: reading where a function actually stands before you design training for it, running a tandem session with the people who'll use it rather than presenting a finished deck.
The influence will come from what you build, what you teach, and how well you make the case for both. A workflow or training program nobody adopts is worse than doing nothing, and the people you're working with will know the difference.
What We're Looking For
We're not hiring for a single background. Strong candidates might come from Revenue Operations, GTM strategy, or consulting, or a similarly ambiguous cross-functional role. What matters is the combination of hands-on AI building and the ability to design and run something that changes how a team works, not just pitch the idea.
Specifically:
  • 5-10 years of professional experience owning a project end-to-end in a fast-moving, cross-functional environment. Comfortable being judged on outcomes, not process.
  • A strong presenter and communicator. You can walk into a room, or a Slack thread, and make a non-obvious idea land with people who weren't already convinced.
  • Hands-on experience building with AI tools: You have hands-on experience with LLM APIs, automation tools (n8n, Zapier, Make). You can build agents, connect systems, and ship real workflows end-to-end.
  • Comfortable designing and running structured programs, training sessions, or onboarding motions, even if that's never been your formal title.
  • High ownership and intensity: You take full ownership of problems, move fast, and push things to completion. You're comfortable operating with urgency and ambiguity.
  • Ambitious and driven: You want to have an outsized impact. You're motivated to build something exceptional and obsessed with making Abacum the most AI-native company in our space.
  • Fintech, FP&A, or finance-adjacent SaaS experience is a meaningful plus.

Why Take It
This role owns the adoption and capability side of AI transformation at Abacum. Not a side project, but a defined program with its own workstreams, baseline, and measurement. You'd be the person who decides what "the rest of the company is genuinely good at using AI" means in practice, and builds the muscle to get there.
The scope is meaningful and the people you'd be working with are good. For the right person, this is the moment to step into the work you've been building toward.
Benefits
  • Competitive compensation including equity package
  • Competitive vacation policy
  • Medical Insurance
  • L&D budget
  • Access to Meditopia (wellbeing platform)
  • Language courses (English / Spanish)

Our Values
Customer Obsession: We share the understanding that Abacum's sole purpose is to create value for customers and relentlessly deploy all creativity and energy to that end.
Audacious Ambition: We dream big and embrace discomfort. We assume risks, make on-time mistakes and learn how to methodically accomplish our goals.
Good People: We are self-reflective and praise diversity of thought. We don't justify the end with the means and know where to draw the line. We have fun every day.
Tough Love: We truly care for everyone in the team and embrace honest feedback and radical candor as ways to genuinely help each other.
Qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender perception or identity, national origin, age, marital status, protected veteran status, or disability status.
