What is ad sales?

Ad Sales, short for advertising sales, refers to the process of selling advertising space or time to businesses and organizations. Professionals in ad sales work for media companies such as television networks, radio stations, digital platforms, or print publications, helping clients promote their products or services through ads. They identify potential clients, present advertising options, negotiate deals, and manage client relationships to ensure successful ad campaigns. Ad sales roles require strong communication, negotiation, and customer service skills. The goal is to maximize revenue for the media company while meeting the marketing needs of clients.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an ad sales professional?

To thrive as an Ad Sales professional, you need strong sales acumen, negotiation skills, and a solid understanding of media trends, often supported by a degree in marketing, communications, or business. Familiarity with CRM platforms, digital advertising tools, and analytics systems such as Salesforce, Google Ads, or Nielsen ratings is typically required. Outstanding interpersonal communication, resilience, and relationship-building abilities set top performers apart. These skills are crucial for driving revenue, securing client partnerships, and adapting to the rapidly evolving advertising landscape.

What are some common challenges faced by ad sales professionals, and how can they be addressed?

Ad Sales professionals often encounter challenges such as meeting aggressive sales targets, adapting to rapidly changing advertising technologies, and managing relationships with a diverse portfolio of clients. Staying informed about industry trends and regularly updating product knowledge can help address these issues. Additionally, strong communication and negotiation skills, along with the ability to analyze client needs, are essential for building lasting partnerships and achieving sales goals.

Clear Channel Outdoor
Job Summary:
The Manager, Ad Sales Marketing, leads the development and execution of strategic ad sales marketing initiatives that support Clear Channel Outdoors's National Sales organization and broader revenue objectives. This role is responsible for shaping compelling go-to-market narratives, sales enablement tools, and marketing programs that drive demand for CCO's advertising solutions among agencies, brands, and programmatic buyers. As a key contributor within the Corporate Marketing organization, this position translates business priorities into impactful sales marketing strategies and materials that clearly articulate the value, differentiation, and performance of CCO's media offerings. While not directly overseeing Product Marketing, this role serves as a strategic partner, ensuring product value propositions and innovations are effectively commercialized through ad sales marketing channels. The Manager collaborates cross-functionally with Sales leadership and teams across Marketing-including Creative, Product, Research & Analytics, Programmatic, and Field Marketing-to align messaging, streamline workflows, and deliver high-quality, revenue-driving solutions at both national and local levels. Reporting to the Director, Ad Sales Marketing, this role also oversees the intake, prioritization, and execution of marketing requests from the National Sales organization, ensuring timely delivery while proactively identifying opportunities to activate key business targets and accelerate revenue growth.
Job Responsibilities
  • Develop and execute strategic ad sales marketing initiatives that drive demand for CCO's advertising solutions across agencies, brands, and programmatic buyers.
  • Lead the creation of high-impact sales presentations, one-sheets, pitch narratives, event packages, and storytelling frameworks used by National and Local Sales teams.
  • Partner with Programmatic Sales and Digital Strategy teams to position CCO's programmatic offerings, audience solutions, and digital capabilities in a compelling and competitive manner.
  • Ensure all sales marketing materials align with corporate positioning, business priorities, and revenue objectives.
  • Partner closely with Product Marketing to translate product innovation, functionality, and data insights into persuasive, sales-ready narratives.
  • Collaborate with Research & Analytics to develop marketplace insights, category intelligence, and data-driven storytelling that unlock new revenue opportunities.
  • Work with Regional and Field Marketing teams to develop scalable materials and programs that can be deployed effectively across national and local markets.
  • Drive cross-functional alignment to ensure consistency in messaging, positioning, and execution.
  • Serve as the strategic lead for marketing requests submitted through CCO's "Marketing Solutions" process, overseeing intake, prioritization, and delivery.
  • Establish clear workflows and expectations across Creative, Communications, Product, Research, Data, and Sales stakeholders.
  • Ensure deliverables are aligned with revenue impact, business priorities, and quality standards.
  • Develop on-brand, visually compelling sales collateral supporting new business development and client retention initiatives.
  • Support RFP responses, category packages, sponsorship programs, and custom marketing solutions that address client objectives and marketplace opportunities.
  • Proactively identify opportunities to equip Sales teams with tools and narratives that drive incremental revenue.
  • Maintain a strong understanding of customer needs, competitive dynamics, industry trends, and technological innovation within the out-of-home and ad tech landscape.
  • Translate marketplace intelligence into actionable marketing strategies that differentiate CCO's offerings.
  • Contribute strategic recommendations that inform new marketing initiatives and revenue-generating opportunities.
  • Drive process improvements that enhance efficiency and clarity across Marketing Solutions, Creative, Product, Sales, and Programmatic teams.
  • Maintain and evolve centralized libraries of sales materials, templates, and creative assets to ensure accessibility and consistency.
  • Support all other duties as assigned.
