How to Get an Accounting Internship?

Accounting internships enable you to gain practical experience working in an accounting office and do tasks like helping with tax preparation, financial report preparation, and auditing. Obtain an accounting internship by applying with an accounting firm. Most accounting firms will require that you are enrolled in an accredited college degree program during your internship. The hiring manager with the accounting firm may require an interview to ensure that you are a good fit for one of the available internships. Be sure to mention relevant qualifications in data entry, financial forecasting, or data analysis.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Accounting Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Accounting Intern, you typically need a solid grasp of basic accounting principles, attention to detail, and progress toward a degree in accounting or finance. Familiarity with spreadsheets, accounting software like QuickBooks or SAP, and Microsoft Excel is often expected. Strong organizational skills, eagerness to learn, and effective communication help interns stand out in collaborative environments. These competencies are crucial for accurately supporting financial processes and gaining valuable experience in a professional accounting setting.

What types of tasks and responsibilities can I expect as an Accounting Intern, and how will these contribute to my professional development?

As an Accounting Intern, you can expect to assist with tasks such as data entry, preparing financial reports, reconciling accounts, and supporting month-end and year-end closing processes. You'll likely work closely with staff accountants and other team members, gaining hands-on experience with accounting software and internal controls. These responsibilities will help you develop practical skills, such as attention to detail, analytical thinking, and familiarity with industry-standard tools—key foundations for a future career in accounting. The exposure to real-world accounting operations and team collaboration will also provide valuable insights into office workflows and professional expectations.

What are accounting interns?
