Accounting Controller

Reports to CFO

Market Title: Controller


Job Purpose

The Controller has overall responsibilities for the accounting management and financial reporting duties for the Firm. This position also collaborates with management to identify and create accounting policies and procedures to manage the Firm and its 500ish projects annually.  


Duties and Responsibilities

The primary duties and responsibilities of this position include the following for 2 primary and related entities, and 2-3 minor related entities:

  • Manage cash, cash requirements, expenditures and disbursements
  • Manage accounts receivable including detailed collections procedures and monthly reporting of status and activities for any invoices plus 60 days outstanding
  • Manage payroll in conjunction with monitoring and reviewing timesheets
  • Manage accounts payable and ensure prompt payments per procurement terms
  • Manage extensive intercompany transactions between related entities
  • Establish, monitor, analyze and interpret financial data/metrics (historical and forecasted) to assist management with strategic decisions for health, growth, and expansion
  • Protects assets by establishing and maintaining internal controls as necessary
  • Assist management with routine strategic financial planning relative to expansion, working capital reserves, and other balance sheet issues 
  • Manage regular distributions/dividends and reporting to multiple equity owners
  • Prepare special reports for management, PMs, clients, and others as required
  • Manage relationship with outside tax CPA to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local tax and reporting and payment requirements
  • Collaborate with management to create timely and useful financial tools, widgets, and reports for project managers and team leaders
  • Manage the project management and accounting software, and manage accounting interface with marketing/CRM software
  • Oversee and troubleshoot in collaboration with PMs the life cycle of projects from setup to closeout (budget, costs/consultants, billing, and AR collection) 
  • Identify distressed project financials and coordinate with PM to resolve issues
  • Apprise senior management of unresolved issues with distressed project financials
  • Oversee and ensure contracts, and contractual/insurance/legal requirements for both clients and subconsultants
  • Manage property and casualty insurance
  • Coordinate with HR on employee updates for new hires, terminations, and changes

Essential Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting with 10 years of related experience
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills


Preferred Qualifications 

The following qualifications are a priority for the position:

  • Substantial tenure in the A/E profession
  • Experience with Deltek's Ajera or Vantagepoint, or similar accounting software


Continuing Education

Regular continuing education in related accounting subjects, governmental compliance and professional development.


Working Conditions

This position requires occasional night and weekend work at times to address payroll, file appropriate tax documents or to provide timely billing on projects.
