Job description

We're looking for a Hands-On Controller who isn't afraid to dig into the details. You'll work closely with project managers and ownership to keep the financials accurate, the cash flowing, and the job costs tight. This is a working controller role — you'll own the accounting function day to day, not just oversee it from a distance. If you understand how a construction company makes (and loses) money on a job, you'll fit right in.

What You'll Do

  • Own the full cycle accounting function: AP, AR, payroll, job costing, and WIP reporting
  • Prepare accurate and timely monthly financial statements and project cost reports
  • Manage cash flow forecasting and maintain banking relationships
  • Oversee AIA billing, lien waivers, and subcontractor payment processes
  • Partner with project managers to track budget-to-actual performance on active jobs
  • Lead year-end close and coordinate with external CPA for tax preparation
  • Implement and improve internal controls and accounting procedures
  • Support bonding, insurance, and prequalification requirements

What We're Looking For

  • 5–8 years of accounting/controller experience
  • Background in construction, civil, or contracting required
  • Strong knowledge of job costing and WIP schedules
  • Proficiency in QuickBooks Online required
  • BA/BS in Accounting, Finance, or related field
  • CPA or CMA a plus, not required
  • Ability to read and interpret project budgets and contracts
  • Comfortable working independently in a lean organization

Why Join Us

  • Direct access to ownership and real influence on company direction
  • Stable pipeline of work across Midwest infrastructure projects
  • Competitive compensation and benefits
  • No bureaucracy — decisions get made fast
  • Opportunity to build and lead a small accounting team as we grow

Compensation

$110,000 – $140,000 per year, DOE. Compensation is flexible for the right candidate — we're more interested in finding the right person than hitting a number. Benefits include health, dental, and vision coverage
