What is the difference between Account Manager Startup vs Account Executive?

AspectAccount Manager StartupAccount Executive
Required CredentialsRelevant experience in client management, sales, or customer service; often a bachelor's degreeSales or marketing background; bachelor's degree often preferred
Work EnvironmentFast-paced startup setting, collaborative teams, flexible rolesSales-driven environment, target-focused, often in corporate or agency settings
Employer & Industry UsageStartups across tech, SaaS, e-commerceSales organizations, tech companies, marketing agencies

While both roles involve client interaction and sales skills, an Account Manager Startup focuses on maintaining and growing existing client relationships within a startup environment. An Account Executive primarily focuses on acquiring new clients and closing sales. The roles overlap in skills but differ in their core responsibilities and work settings.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Account Manager in a startup environment, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Account Manager at a startup, you need strong relationship-building skills, sales acumen, and a background in business or marketing, often evidenced by a relevant degree or experience. Familiarity with CRM tools like Salesforce, project management platforms, and digital communication systems is typically required. Outstanding adaptability, proactive problem-solving, and effective communication help you stand out in the fast-paced and dynamic startup setting. These skills and qualities are crucial for driving customer success, managing rapid change, and supporting business growth in a competitive environment.

What are some unique challenges Account Managers face when working at a startup compared to established companies?

Account Managers at startups often encounter a fast-paced, rapidly changing environment where processes and structures are still evolving. This means they may need to wear multiple hats, adapting quickly to shifting client needs and internal priorities. Unlike larger companies with established support systems, startup Account Managers often take on broader responsibilities, such as helping shape customer onboarding or product feedback loops. This dynamic can be both challenging and rewarding, offering significant opportunities to influence growth and build strong client relationships from the ground up.

What does an Account Manager do at a startup?

An Account Manager at a startup is responsible for building and maintaining strong relationships with clients, ensuring their needs are met, and helping them achieve success with the company's products or services. They often serve as the main point of contact between the client and the startup, handling inquiries, addressing concerns, and identifying opportunities for growth and upselling. In the fast-paced startup environment, Account Managers may also assist with onboarding, troubleshooting, and collaborating closely with sales, marketing, and product teams to deliver an excellent customer experience.

Through our Professional Subscriptions-including POLITICO Pro, E&E News, and Agency IQ-we deliver the depth, tools, and insights that power key decisions in Washington and beyond

We're looking for a Senior Account Manager to join our Strategic Accounts team-responsible for deepening relationships with POLITICO's largest and most high-value customers, including major corporations and associations. As a Senior Account Manager, you will own a portfolio of 40-50 key accounts across multiple industries. You will drive account growth through strategic engagement, business acumen, and meaningful customer conversations. You'll partner closely with a dedicated Customer Success team to deliver a best-in-class client experience-balancing vision-setting with execution.

What You'll Do:

  • Build and execute strategic account plans focused on retention, upsell, and long-term expansion

  • Lead high-impact conversations-both virtual and in-person-with stakeholders across customer organizations, from daily users to senior executives

  • Identify opportunities for cross-sell and product adoption (POLITICO Pro US, Pro Europe, and E&E News)

  • Build cross-functional partnerships to advance strategic initiatives, resolve complex account issues, and ensure alignment with evolving product and market priorities

  • Develop and lead de-risking strategies to protect revenue and strengthen client value ahead of potential contractions or churn

  • Partner with Customer Success to align on delivery strategy and deepen customer value

  • Leverage insights from usage, account health, and industry trends to recommend relevant solutions

  • Drive renewals with a focus on longer-term contracts and YoY growth targets

  • Represent POLITICO with credibility and empathy, serving as a trusted advisor to client stakeholders

  • Log activity and maintain pipeline hygiene in Salesforce, sharing updates with leadership as needed

What You'll Need:

  • 5-8+ years of experience in account management, client success, or consultative sales

  • A proven track record of growing accounts through renewals, upsell, and cross-sell

  • Experience successfully working cross-functionally with a Customer Success team to deliver client outcomes

  • Comfort navigating complex organizations and building relationships across all levels of seniority

  • Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills

  • High business and sales acumen-you know how to connect policy impact to business needs

  • A strategic mindset, able to think beyond one transaction to grow long-term account value

  • A growth mindset-you believe we all have room to improve, and you value ongoing coaching and development

  • Proficiency with Salesforce or similar CRM tools

About Us.

POLITICO illuminates the forces shaping global power. Since 2007, we have delivered intelligence thatanticipatestomorrow's headlines, not reports on yesterday's news. As politics has increasingly become the defining force of our era, our work has never been more vital.

Cabinet secretaries and Ministers start their mornings with our analysis. CEOs shape strategy around our reporting. Advocacy leaders rely on our insights to move policy. We deliver the straightforward facts and clear-eyed analysis they need to navigate the most complex political landscape of our lifetimes.

Our 1,100+ publishing professionals across the world's key democratic capitals-Washington, Brussels, London, Paris, Berlin, Sacramento, and New York-form the world's premier politics and policy newsroom. We tell the story of how power really works by explaining who wields it and how they plan to exercise it, connecting dots others miss and delivering scoops from sources othersdon'teven know exist.

Innovation has always been a core tenet of our story. At launch, we bet that depth would trump scale, that talent would trump traffic, and that politics would become central to modern life. In 2011, we made another bet and launched POLITICO Pro to help decision-makers understand the business of government, transforming both how they shape government action and the business of journalism itself.

These bets have made POLITICO the most successful digital news startup of its generation and the indispensable resource for leaders who shape the future. Today, we are a rarity inmedia: a growing, profitable, and sustainable news organization.
