To thrive as an Account Manager at a startup, you need strong relationship-building skills, sales acumen, and a background in business or marketing, often evidenced by a relevant degree or experience. Familiarity with CRM tools like Salesforce, project management platforms, and digital communication systems is typically required. Outstanding adaptability, proactive problem-solving, and effective communication help you stand out in the fast-paced and dynamic startup setting. These skills and qualities are crucial for driving customer success, managing rapid change, and supporting business growth in a competitive environment.

What are some unique challenges Account Managers face when working at a startup compared to established companies?

Account Managers at startups often encounter a fast-paced, rapidly changing environment where processes and structures are still evolving. This means they may need to wear multiple hats, adapting quickly to shifting client needs and internal priorities. Unlike larger companies with established support systems, startup Account Managers often take on broader responsibilities, such as helping shape customer onboarding or product feedback loops. This dynamic can be both challenging and rewarding, offering significant opportunities to influence growth and build strong client relationships from the ground up.

What does an Account Manager do at a startup?

An Account Manager at a startup is responsible for building and maintaining strong relationships with clients, ensuring their needs are met, and helping them achieve success with the company's products or services. They often serve as the main point of contact between the client and the startup, handling inquiries, addressing concerns, and identifying opportunities for growth and upselling. In the fast-paced startup environment, Account Managers may also assist with onboarding, troubleshooting, and collaborating closely with sales, marketing, and product teams to deliver an excellent customer experience.

About the Role

We are seeking a driven, hands-on Regional Manager to lead the launch and growth of a new startup region. This is a unique opportunity for a strong operations leader who enjoys building something from the ground up, developing teams, serving customers well, and partnering closely with Business Development to grow a region significantly over time.

The region will begin with two major account launches, and the Regional Manager will be responsible for ensuring those accounts are launched successfully, stabilized quickly, and positioned for long-term success. From there, this leader will help build the people, systems, customer relationships, and operational structure needed to grow the region over the next 3–5 years with the goal of expanding the region to 10x its starting size

This role is ideal for someone who can be hands-on during startup phases while also thinking strategically about scalable growth.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the successful startup and stabilization of two major new account launches.
  • Build strong customer relationships and ensure high levels of satisfaction and retention.
  • Hire, train, coach, and develop managers, supervisors, and frontline team members.
  • Ensure accounts are operating within labor, supply, and overall budget expectations.
  • Maintain strong quality standards through inspections, follow-up, communication, and accountability.
  • Partner closely with Business Development on new opportunities, site walks, customer transitions, and growth planning.
  • Support the sales-to-operations handoff to ensure new customers are set up for success.
  • Develop scalable operating systems, routines, and leadership structure as the region grows.
  • Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, margin, service quality, and customer experience.
  • Help grow the region significantly over the next 3–5 years, with a goal of expanding the region to 10x its starting size.

What We’re Looking For

  • Strong operations leadership experience, preferably in facilities services, commercial cleaning, or a similar service-based industry.
  • Experience launching new accounts, managing multiple sites, or building teams in a growing market.
  • Ability to lead through both hands-on execution and strategic planning.
  • Strong customer relationship skills with a service-first mindset.
  • Proven ability to manage budgets, labor, quality, and team performance.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial, startup-style environment.
  • Strong communication, follow-up, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to partner with sales, operations, customers, and field teams to achieve results.

What Success Looks Like

Success in this role will be measured by successful account launches, customer retention, quality performance, budget control, team development, and profitable regional growth. The right leader will help establish a strong foundation, protect key customer relationships, and build a region capable of scaling significantly over the next several years.

Why This Role Matters

This is more than a maintenance role — it is a build-and-grow leadership opportunity. The Regional Manager will play a critical role in shaping the future of a new region, developing the team, supporting business growth, and creating long-term customer success.
