What does an account manager do at a startup?

An Account Manager at a startup is responsible for building and maintaining strong relationships with clients, ensuring their needs are met, and helping them achieve success with the company's products or services. They often serve as the main point of contact between the client and the startup, handling inquiries, addressing concerns, and identifying opportunities for growth and upselling. In the fast-paced startup environment, Account Managers may also assist with onboarding, troubleshooting, and collaborating closely with sales, marketing, and product teams to deliver an excellent customer experience.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as an account manager in a startup?

To thrive as an Account Manager at a startup, you need strong relationship-building skills, sales acumen, and a background in business or marketing, often evidenced by a relevant degree or experience. Familiarity with CRM tools like Salesforce, project management platforms, and digital communication systems is typically required. Outstanding adaptability, proactive problem-solving, and effective communication help you stand out in the fast-paced and dynamic startup setting. These skills and qualities are crucial for driving customer success, managing rapid change, and supporting business growth in a competitive environment.

What unique challenges do account managers face when working at a startup compared to established companies?

Account Managers at startups often encounter a fast-paced, rapidly changing environment where processes and structures are still evolving. This means they may need to wear multiple hats, adapting quickly to shifting client needs and internal priorities. Unlike larger companies with established support systems, startup Account Managers often take on broader responsibilities, such as helping shape customer onboarding or product feedback loops. This dynamic can be both challenging and rewarding, offering significant opportunities to influence growth and build strong client relationships from the ground up.

Job description

Company Description

Founded in 2013, CrowdStreet is a FinTech company that's transforming the $15 trillion U.S. real estate market through its innovative approach to online fundraising and investor relationship management. Our white-label SaaS solution, Sponsor Direct, provides real estate firms with their own fundraising and investor management portal integrated into their website. Our Marketplace is the #1 direct-to-investor commercial real estate marketplace in the U.S. We currently manage $2.6 B in real estate value through our platform and we are experiencing hockey stick growth. We're targeting 250% annual revenue growth and need smart, capable employees to continue our momentum. CrowdStreet is well funded from Bay Area VC firms with a very healthy balance sheet. We welcome you to join our team.

Job Description

To support our company's rapid growth, we are hiring an Account Executive with a proven track record of success selling technology solutions into the real estate or finance industries. This position is based at our Portland headquarters and reports to our Director of Sales.

What You'll Be Doing

As an Account Executive, you will be responsible selling our SaaS and Marketplace solutions to commercial real estate investment managers (sponsors) within your designated territory.

Our customers are private real estate investment firms, so the more understanding you have of how they think, act and invest, the better prepared you will be to succeed in a sales position at CrowdStreet. Your ability to ask questions in a conversational manner, discover the customer's needs and then diagnose their pain points are essential skills. The entire online investing for private real estate industry is new, so you will need to be an effective education-based sales person with the ability to compel them to purchase...traditional closing skills still matter. Our solution is complex, so you have to be very intelligent with the ability to continuously pivot your value-proposition based on your buyer's needs.

You will be partnered with a Sales Development Rep for your territory, yet it's your ultimate responsibility to build a strong pipeline of opportunities in Salesforce.com and work your prospects aggressively. Given the enormous market opportunity, It's becoming a competitive field, so you need the ability to consult with the buyer, build trust & rapport and ultimately convince them that CrowdStreet is the ultimate partner to help them execute their online fundraising strategy.  You will be responsible for a quarterly quota and will have uncapped earning potential.

Real estate is a relationship-based business, so your job does not end after your first sale is closed. You will continue to nurture accounts in your territory to farm for new business within existing customer accounts. Fortunately, many of our customers are repeat customers, so you'll have ample add-on and cross-sell opportunities.

This is an inside sales role, yet you will travel to your territory on an as-needed basis to meet customers and grow your network in territory.

Qualifications

What We Must Have:

  • 3+ years selling complex vertical specific solutions targeting new accounts.

  • Experience selling SaaS solutions

  • Experience selling in Finance and/or Real Estate sectors.

  • Experience with advanced sales automation tools (i.e. Salesforce).

Not Required, But Nice To Have:

  • Bachelor's degree in Business or related field.

  • Direct experience with investment real estate

  • Experience with selling a Marketplace solution.
