What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Academic Grader, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Academic Grader, strong subject matter expertise, attention to detail, and familiarity with academic standards are essential, often supported by at least a bachelor's degree in the relevant field. Proficiency in grading platforms such as Canvas, Blackboard, or Turnitin is typically required. Excellent written communication, objectivity, and time management distinguish outstanding graders. These skills ensure fair, consistent, and timely assessment of student work, supporting academic integrity and student success.

What are some common challenges faced by Academic Graders and how can they be managed effectively?

Academic Graders often encounter challenges such as maintaining consistency in grading, managing a high volume of assignments within tight deadlines, and providing meaningful feedback to students. To address these, graders can use detailed rubrics, participate in calibration sessions with other graders or instructors, and set aside dedicated time blocks for efficient grading. Open communication with faculty and leveraging digital grading tools can also help streamline the process and ensure fairness.

What are academic graders and what do they do?

Academic graders are individuals, often students or teaching assistants, tasked with evaluating and scoring assignments, exams, or other coursework submitted by students. Their primary responsibility is to ensure that grading is consistent, fair, and aligns with the instructor's guidelines and rubrics. Academic graders may also provide feedback to help students understand their mistakes and improve future performance. They work closely with faculty to maintain academic standards and may handle administrative tasks related to grading as well.

Job description

About the Role:
SiSTEM is hiring experienced educators and academic advisors who want to help motivated middle and high school families make smarter decisions about their child's academic future.
This is not a tutoring role. And it is not traditional school counseling.
Our Academic Coaches operate as strategic partners for families navigating the full grades 6โ€“12 journey โ€” helping students build the right academic foundation, develop the habits and skills to execute on their plan, and pursue the experiences that position them for what matters most.
If you have experience in any of the following areas, we want to hear from you:
  • Course sequencing and academic rigor decisions (Pre-AP, Honors/GT, AP, IB, dual enrollment).
  • Middle school to high school transition planning.
  • Academic pacing and workload balance.
  • Extracurricular and experience planning aligned to student goals.
  • Student motivation, executive function, and learning habits.
  • Long-term roadmap development across grades 6โ€“12.

You do not need to specialize in every area. If your strength is executive function and student development, or course planning and academic strategy, or anything in between โ€” we want you on our team.

What You'll Do:
  • Work with families in grades 6โ€“12 to develop and refine personalized academic roadmaps.
  • Guide families through course selection, rigor decisions, and academic pacing based on each student's strengths, goals, and capacity.
  • Help students and parents think strategically about extracurriculars, summer programs, and experiences that align with long-term goals.
  • Lead structured planning conversations that give families clarity and confidence about next steps.
  • Collaborate with SiSTEM's AI planning system (STEMMIE) so coaching sessions build on each student's evolving roadmap.
  • Communicate clearly with families about academic strategy, trade-offs, and realistic expectations.
  • Maintain high standards of professionalism, preparation, and thoughtful guidance.

What We're Looking For:
We are selective about who joins the SiSTEM team.

Strong candidates typically have:
  • 5+ years of experience in education, school counseling, academic advising, or student guidance.
  • Deep knowledge of middle and high school academic systems, including course progressions, graduation requirements, and college readiness benchmarks.
  • Experience helping families make strategic academic decisions, not just meeting minimum requirements.
  • A track record of guiding students toward meaningful academic outcomes.
  • The ability to translate complex academic systems into clear, actionable guidance for families.
  • Clear, patient communication with both parents and students.
  • Professional reliability and high standards.

Bonus: current or former school counselors, teachers with experience advising students on course planning, educational coaches or learning specialists, advisors with experience supporting GT or advanced learners.

Why Coaches Join SiSTEM:
SiSTEM connects experienced educators with motivated families who are serious about long-term academic planning. We provide the infrastructure so you can focus on strategy and guidance.
  • Set your own rates and packages based on your expertise and the value you deliver.
  • Set your own schedule and availability โ€” you decide when and how often you coach.
  • Families are matched to you based on their child's specific needs, goals, and preferences โ€” no competing for leads or chasing clients.
  • Work with families who actively seek and value expert guidance.
  • We handle marketing and family acquisition.
  • Structured roadmap frameworks and milestone systems to support your sessions.
  • AI-supported planning tools that organize student context before you walk into a session.
  • Build long-term coaching relationships with families across multiple years.

To Apply:
If you have experience in any of the areas listed above, register your interest at www.sistemtutoring.com/tutors and click Apply to fill out our form. Tell us what you specialize in, your experience, and what makes you effective with students and families.
