Safety Specialist

APL Engineered Materials, Inc. manufactures specialty inorganic solid chemicals for use in radiation detection, conventional lighting, and critical mineral-related applications. We have an exciting opportunity for an Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Specialist in Urbana, Illinois.

This is a hands-on role responsible for maintaining safety programs, conducting facility inspections, managing regulatory reporting, and ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local regulations. The EHS Specialist will regularly work throughout the manufacturing facility to identify hazards, support employees, coordinate compliance activities, and promote a safe work environment.

The EHS Specialist is responsible for maintaining safety programs, managing regulatory reporting and permits, and ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local regulations while supporting a safe and compliant manufacturing operation.

Please note: This position is not eligible for visa sponsorship, including H-1B.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Maintain required permits, licenses, and compliance documentation for facility operations (including OSHA, EPA, DOT, and other applicable regulations).
  • Prepare and submit required regulatory reports such as OSHA 300, EPA TRI, hazardous waste reports, and Tier II filings.
  • Maintain regulatory accounts, records, and supporting compliance documentation.
  • Conduct routine facility inspections, safety audits, and walkthroughs to ensure compliance with internal policies and regulatory requirements. Document findings and track corrective actions.
  • Perform monthly inspections of the facility, including equipment, hazardous material storage areas, and emergency safety systems.
  • Support incident reporting, investigate safety concerns, and help implement corrective and preventive actions.
  • Support emergency response planning and hazardous materials shipping compliance.
  • Maintain and update employee safety programs, training records, and safety documentation.
  • Participate in day-to-day safety activities across the facility, including physical inspections and hands-on support of safe work practices.

Qualifications/Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Occupational Health & Safety, Chemistry, or related field preferred, or equivalent combination of education and relevant hands-on experience in EHS, safety, or regulatory compliance
  • 1–3 years of experience in EHS, safety, regulatory compliance, or a related role
  • Working knowledge of OSHA regulations required; experience with EPA, DOT, hazardous materials, and environmental reporting systems required
  • ASP, CSP, or CHMM certification preferred but not required
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, written, and verbal communication skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
