Apl Programming information

What is an APL programming job?

An APL Programming job involves using the APL (A Programming Language) language to develop, maintain, and optimize software solutions, often in fields like finance, data analysis, and mathematics. APL is known for its concise syntax and powerful array-processing capabilities. Professionals in this role typically work on high-performance computing tasks, algorithm development, and complex data manipulations. They may collaborate with analysts, scientists, and engineers to implement efficient solutions.

What types of projects and responsibilities can I expect as an APL programmer?

As an APL Programmer, you will typically work on projects involving complex data analysis, algorithm development, or legacy system maintenance, particularly in finance, insurance, or scientific research sectors. Your day-to-day tasks may include designing and optimizing APL code, troubleshooting and debugging existing applications, and collaborating with analysts or business users to understand requirements. You'll also often be involved in integrating APL solutions with other technologies or migrating legacy code to modern platforms. This role usually requires a combination of independent work and teamwork, where clear communication and documentation are key to project success and continuous improvement.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the APL programming position, and why are they important?

To thrive as an APL Programmer, you need strong problem-solving abilities, advanced mathematical reasoning, and proficiency in the APL programming language, often supported by a degree in computer science or engineering. Familiarity with development environments such as Dyalog APL, APLX, or IBM APL2, as well as experience integrating APL with other systems, is highly beneficial. Attention to detail, effective communication, and collaboration skills help you work efficiently with team members and stakeholders. These skills are critical for developing efficient algorithms and maintaining robust, high-performance software solutions in specialized industries.

Is the APL programming language still used?

APL programming is still used in niche areas such as financial modeling, data analysis, and research environments due to its powerful array processing capabilities. While it is less common than mainstream languages, some organizations and developers continue to maintain and use APL for specialized applications and legacy systems.

Institutional Operations Technology – Senior Technologist

The Institutional Operations Technology team supports the Funds, Intermediary and Institutional SMA business. We’re looking for a Senior Technologist with Full Stack .Net/C# skills to Lead, Design, build, and support a scalable, high-performance platform (vendor and in-house) across Fund and Intermediary channels. This role requires strong engineering fundamentals, deep SQL/data skills, and the ability to work autonomously—driving delivery from requirements through production release and ongoing support.

What You’ll Own
  • Design, build, and maintain internal applications and integrations with third‑party platforms (e.g., SEI, APL, Fund Admins, Transfer Agents, Wire houses etc.).
  • Partner with Business and Operations stakeholders to gather requirements, document them clearly, and produce technical designs/specifications.
  • Write clean, maintainable, well‑tested code; contribute to team standards through code reviews, patterns, and documentation.
  • Deliver end‑to‑end through the SDLC: design, development, testing coordination, release/deployment, and post‑release validation.
  • Diagnose and resolve escalated production issues; improve reliability via monitoring, performance tuning, and root‑cause remediation.
  • Contribute to platform modernization initiatives (e.g., upgrades, migrations, infrastructure improvements).
  • Manage multiple workstreams (new features, integrations, maintenance) by prioritizing effectively and communicating trade‑offs.
  • Collaborate with engineers across the organization; participate in technical discussions to drive the best solution.
  • Proactively identify and drive improvements in performance, scalability, resiliency, and developer productivity.
  • Mentor junior developers through pairing, reviews, and technical guidance.
Required Qualifications
  • 10+ years of professional software development experience and a BS/MS in Computer Science (or related discipline) or equivalent practical experience.
  • Experience in Asset Management (focus on Funds and Intermediary businesses eco‑system) is a must‑have.
  • Experience with vendor platforms - SEI and/or APL, Fund Admin is a must‑have.
  • Experience with the Intermediary model delivery ecosystem, including SMA/UMA programs, wirehouse/sponsor platform workflows, and model management platforms such as Envestnet and Orion.
  • Strong backend expertise in C#/.NET, including building and operating production services.
  • Advanced SQL and data skills: data modeling, analysis, and building/optimizing complex queries; experience with ETL/ELT concepts and tooling.
  • Strong experience with Microsoft SQL Server and Snowflake, including query design and performance optimization.
  • Full‑stack web development experience with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript (jQuery where applicable).
  • Hands‑on integration experience with REST; comfortable working with JSON/XML.
  • Experience with Azure DevOps, Git, and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Ability to operate independently with minimal supervision: can take ambiguous problems, propose solutions, and drive them to completion.
  • Strong communication skills: able to explain technical concepts and trade‑offs to technical and non‑technical audiences.
  • Experience working in an Agile/Scrum environment.
  • Experience using AI‑assisted development tools (e.g., Claude Code, Codex, GitHub Copilot or similar) responsibly to accelerate delivery while maintaining quality.
  • High ownership and accountability for delivery quality and production outcomes.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience deploying and operating distributed systems on Kubernetes, OpenShift, and/or Azure.
  • Familiarity with Domain‑Driven Design (DDD) and event‑driven or service‑oriented architecture patterns.
  • Experience with Python & Perl, shell scripting.
  • Experience with scheduling software such as Tidal or Control‑M.
