ABOUT US
Bird Johnson, a Fairbanks Morse Defense company, is a trusted provider of critical power and propulsion solutions for Naval Defense. At our Pascagoula facility, machinists produce precision, large-scale defense components where safety, quality, and craftsmanship matter every day.
POSITION OVERVIEW
We are seeking an entry- to mid-level CNC Machinist for 2nd or 3rd shift. You will set up, operate, and maintain advanced CNC equipment, including 5-axis and 6-axis milling and turning centers, to produce complex hubs, impellers, fixed-pitch propellers (FPP), and controllable-pitch propellers (CPP). Your precision and technical skill will directly support U.S. Navy readiness by delivering mission-critical parts to exacting defense-grade standards.
SHIFT SCHEDULE
Short-term training schedule: 1st Shift, 6:00 a.m.-2:30 p.m.
  • 2nd Shift: 2:00 p.m.-10:30 p.m.
  • 3rd Shift: 10:00 p.m.-6:30 a.m.
  • Candidates must be able to work their assigned shift and occasional overtime based on production needs.
  • Shift differential may apply.

WHAT YOU'LL DO
  • Set up and operate CNC mills, lathes, and complex multi-axis machining centers efficiently and safely.
  • Produce component parts from engineering drawings, internal sketches, and U.S. Navy specifications.
  • Interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, work instructions, and GD&T requirements.
  • Select tooling, adjust offsets, and verify machine parameters for complex geometries.
  • Inspect work using micrometers, calipers, gauges, CMMs, and other precision instruments.
  • Complete follow-up operations such as deburring, polishing, and grinding.
  • Maintain a clean, safe work area in compliance with company and Department of Defense standards.
  • Document production, quality, and maintenance activity accurately.
  • Partner with supervisors, engineers, and fellow machinists to troubleshoot issues and deliver quality parts to specification.
  • Perform other duties within the required scope of work as assigned.

WHAT YOU BRING
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Associate degree or CNC Machining Technology certification from a two-year program.
  • Three or more years of machining experience.
  • Knowledge of machining fundamentals, G-code, M-code, and shop mathematics, including basic arithmetic, geometry, and algebra.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and GD&T.
  • Proficiency with precision inspection tools.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) properly.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and to bend, stoop, lift, reach above the shoulders, push, pull, and climb stairs.
  • U.S. citizenship, as required for defense contract work.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government Security Clearance.
  • Ability and willingness to work 2nd or 3rd shift, including overtime, weekends, and schedule adjustments as production demands require.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE
  • Defense manufacturing experience.
  • Active Confidential-level or higher security clearance.
  • Experience with Fanuc or Siemens CNC controls.
  • Familiarity with lean manufacturing, 5S, or TPM principles.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
