What are 3rd party collections?

3rd party collections refer to the process where a company hires an external agency to collect debts on its behalf. These agencies, known as third-party collection agencies, contact individuals or businesses who owe money and attempt to recover the outstanding amounts. Their role is to negotiate payment plans, settle debts, and ensure compliance with legal guidelines. The original creditor pays the collection agency a fee or a percentage of the amount recovered for their services.

3rd Party Collections agents often encounter challenges such as handling difficult or unresponsive debtors, adhering to strict regulatory requirements, and meeting collection targets. Success in this role involves strong communication skills, emotional resilience, and a solid understanding of relevant laws like the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA). Many agencies provide ongoing training and support, and agents frequently collaborate with supervisors and legal teams to resolve complex cases efficiently. Building rapport and using negotiation techniques can also improve recovery rates and job satisfaction.

Job description

Job Title: Collections Coordinator, Resident Experience
FLSA Status: Hourly
Location: New York, NY
Worksite Status: Onsite
We're Beam Living, a multi-family residential property management company that elevates, oversees, and supports communities throughout New York City. A Blackstone-owned portfolio company, our goal is to create fulfilling places to work, live and grow. We believe in leaving people and places better than we found them, which is why the communities we own and operate are some of the most exciting, vibrant, and iconic in New York City.
We are a group of people who believe in making every day better than yesterday. We put people first because we know that's how you create incredible communities. We are on a mission to make city life happier - want to join us?
As a Collections Coordinator on the Resident Experience team, you'll do work with residents and third party collections partners and be responsible for oversight of collection efforts, resident communications, and collections reporting.
What you will do:
  • Work closely with property and finance teams to identify collections opportunities.
  • Proactively engage current and former residents to address outstanding balances.
  • Escalate accounts to third-party collection agencies once all internal efforts have been fully exhausted.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for residents and third-party collections partners to actively manage cases through to resolution.
  • Respond promptly and hospitably to resident inquiries via phone and email.
  • Develop collections reporting to provide monthly updates on key metrics and results.
  • Lead ad-hoc projects as assigned by manager.
  • Empathetically and objectively review situations to ensure we deliver on our commitment to leave residents happier than we found them.

What you should have:
  • 1-3 years of collections or customer service experience
  • The ability to connect with others
  • Strong communication and organizational skills
  • The discipline and willingness to do what needs to be done.
  • A love for doing what others won't and solving difficult problems.
  • A desire to grow and take on ever increasing responsibility.
  • Doing any, or all of that, in a multi-family environment would be good too.

What we offer:
We know that if we take care of our team, everything else will fall into place. We aren't perfect, but we will try to set very clear expectations, always let you know where you stand, and do everything in our power to help you get where you want to go.
Hourly Rate: $28.00 - $33.00
Exact compensation may vary based on skills, experience & location.
Benefits: Beam provides a variety of benefits to team members, including health insurance coverage eligibly on your first day of work, retirement savings plan, paid parental leave, educational assistance, mental health resources, paid holidays and paid time off (PTO).
