What are some common challenges faced in 3D printer sales, and how can I overcome them?

One common challenge in 3D printer sales is addressing technical questions from clients who may have varying levels of understanding about 3D printing technology. To overcome this, it's essential to develop a strong foundational knowledge of both the hardware and software aspects of the products you sell. Additionally, you may encounter long sales cycles, especially when working with businesses that need to evaluate significant investments. Building trust through clear communication, offering demonstrations, and providing tailored solutions can help move deals forward. Collaboration with technical support and product specialists is also key to handling complex client requirements effectively.

What does a 3D Printer Sales professional do?

A 3D Printer Sales professional specializes in selling 3D printing machines and related products to businesses, educational institutions, and individuals. They provide information about different types of 3D printers, their features, and help customers choose the best model for their specific needs. These professionals also demonstrate the printers, offer technical support, and may assist with after-sales service. Their role is crucial in guiding customers through the buying process and ensuring they are satisfied with their purchase.

How much do 3D print sellers make?

3D printer sales professionals typically earn between $40,000 and $80,000 annually, depending on experience, sales volume, and commission structures. Successful sellers often have technical knowledge of 3D printing technology and strong customer service skills.

Is selling 3D prints a good side hustle?

3D Printer Sales professionals can leverage their skills to create and sell custom 3D printed items as a side hustle. Success depends on product quality, market demand, and marketing efforts, with some individuals earning extra income through online platforms or local sales. Having knowledge of 3D modeling and printer operation is essential for this side activity.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a 3D Printer Sales professional, and why are they important?

To thrive as a 3D Printer Sales professional, you need a solid understanding of additive manufacturing technology, sales fundamentals, and ideally a background in engineering or technical sales. Familiarity with 3D printer hardware, slicing software, CRM systems, and experience with product demonstrations are typically required. Strong interpersonal skills, persuasive communication, and the ability to understand and address customer needs help set top performers apart. These skills are vital for effectively conveying product value, building client relationships, and closing sales in the rapidly evolving 3D printing industry.

Do I need a license to sell 3D prints?

As a 3D printer sales professional, you generally do not need a specific license to sell 3D prints, but you must comply with local business regulations, including obtaining any necessary business licenses or permits. Additionally, understanding intellectual property laws is important when selling custom or copyrighted designs. Certifications or training in 3D printing can enhance credibility but are not typically required for sales roles.

Job description

About Formlabs:
Do you want to change how the world creates?
At Formlabs, we're building the tools that make it possible for anyone to bring their ideas to life, from cutting-edge products to life-saving medical devices. Our 3D printing technology powers innovation at more than 50,000 industry leaders worldwide, including Apple, Google, Tesla, New Balance, and NASA. Together, we're helping everyone design, prototype, and manufacture faster than ever before.
We're a team of hands-on builders, engineers, and innovators reinventing how the world makes physical things. If you're ready to shape the future of fabrication, come build it with us.
Your Impact:
We're looking for a Product Marketing Manager to own marketing for our Dental business and drive adoption of our 3D printers, materials, and software across the dental industry. This is an end-to-end marketing role. You'll run the go-to-market strategy, lead new product launches, own messaging and positioning, build content, enable sales, and turn market and competitive insight into campaigns that move the business. If you're a marketing manager or product marketing manager who likes owning concurrent workstreams and seeing your work show up in clinics and labs, this is a role where strong project management and hands-on execution make a visible difference.
What You'll Do:
  • Lead go-to-market and product launches for new dental hardware, software, and materials
  • Build positioning and messaging that connects market and technology trends to dental personas and use cases
  • Partner with leadership to shape and execute the dental marketing strategy
  • Plan and run marketing campaigns across email, social media, and other digital and traditional channels
  • Own the content and strategy of the Formlabs Dental website
  • Develop high-impact content including case studies, workflow videos, website copy, and customer stories
  • Track competitors and adjust positioning as the market shifts
  • Enable direct sales teams and channel partners with sales enablement materials and co-branded campaigns
  • Promote and demo Formlabs products at conferences, trade shows, and events
  • Collaborate with dental professionals, key opinion leaders (KOLs), and cross-functional content, creative, events, sales, and product teams
  • Track, analyze, and report on campaign performance to inform future investment

About You:
  • 3+ years in product marketing, marketing management, growth marketing, or product management, ideally at a B2B hardware, software, medical device, or technology company
  • A track record of running marketing programs end to end, with strong project management and the ability to keep concurrent workstreams on track
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication, with a knack for crafting clear, compelling messaging and positioning
  • Experience across digital and traditional marketing channels
  • A collaborator who partners well with sales and marketing to build training, value propositions, and differentiation
  • A creative mindset and a passion for designing campaigns that win customers
  • A bias for action: proactive, solution-driven, and able to execute quickly and anticipate challenges
  • Strong business judgment and initiative, comfortable solving strategic problems in real time
  • Curious about technology, and interested in 3D printing

Bonus Skills:
  • Experience marketing in the dental, medical device, or lab equipment industry
  • A background as a dental professional (dentist or dental technician) who moved into marketing
  • A technical, STEM, or life sciences background (a plus, not a requirement)

Our Benefits & Perks:
  • Robust equity program to build future wealth through RSUs
  • Comprehensive healthcare coverage (Medical, Dental, Vision)
  • 401K matching and access to financial advisors
  • Generous paid Parental Leave (up to 16 weeks)
  • Tenure-based paid Sabbatical Leave (up to 6 weeks)
  • Flexible Out of Office Plan, take time when you need it
  • Ample on-site parking & pre-tax commuter benefits
  • Healthy on-site lunches, snacks, beverages, & treats
  • Regular sponsored professional development opportunities
  • Many opt-in culture events across our diverse community
  • And of course, unlimited 3D prints

We are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity at our company. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status.
Even if you don't check every box, but see yourself contributing, please apply. Help us build an inclusive community that will change the face of 3D printing.
Compensation
We are all owners of Formlabs and direct beneficiaries of our success. We believe that equity is a critical component of compensation at Formlabs, and we want our newest team members to understand the potential value of their equity compensation. Full time employees receive equity, in the form of RSUs. Your financial investment will grow with us in accordance to your impact.
At Formlabs, base pay is one part of our total compensation package and is determined within a range. Your base pay will depend on your skills, qualifications, experience, location and expected impact on the organization.
The annual base pay range for this role is:
$85,000-$135,000 USD
