Overview
Under the direction supervision of a pharmacist, the pharmacy technician aids the pharmacist in the receipt, preparation, and delivery of medication to patients, families, and/or care givers. The technician maintains a practice environment that is in accordance with Iowa Board of Pharmacy Rules, Joint Commission, USP, ASHP, DEA, and the FDA.

Responsibilities
Technical Support
  • Under the supervision of the pharmacist enters, labels, and prepares medication orders.
  • Maintains patients profiles by adding/updating demographics, allergies, and insurance information
  • Exhibits and maintains knowledge of the software, robotics, point of sale, and mailing systems utilized to prepare and dispense prescriptions, and over the counter products.
  • Exhibits and maintains extensive knowledge in processing insurance claims and reimbursement procedures.
  • Assists in maintaining adequate stock levels of pharmaceuticals and supplies through established inventory procedures. Communicates unusual usage patterns to supervisor and inventory staff.
  • Assists in the management of 340B and Pharmacy virtual and on-hand inventories.

Departmental Support
  • Promotes the development, preparation, implementation and attainment of departmental goals, policies, and projects
  • Serves on departmental committees as assigned.
  • Attends in-services, on the job training, and attends at least 75% of required department meetings.
  • Performs departmental inspections and controlled substance verification as assigned
  • Assists with the education, training or orientation of pharmacy technicians, and new hires.
  • Communicates with pharmacist or supervisor as necessary when problems or unusual circumstances arise.

Customer Service
  • Assists patients who are dropping off and/or picking up prescription or non-prescription orders.
  • Communicates effectively with staff, physician office personnel, and customers to provide timely service, accurate information, to reduce problems and minimize exceptions.
  • Communicates with insurance carriers to resolved claim rejections, and communicates with insurance carriers to obtain refill authorizations.
  • Triage incoming calls. Provide answers to routine pharmacy procedures and refers drug information questions to a pharmacist as appropriate.
  • Enroll patients in the Med to Bed, including visiting patients on the floor to promote the program.

Accounting Support
  • Reconciles cash registers
  • Prepares daily deposits
  • Reconciles and records incoming insurance checks

Qualifications
  • High School Diploma
  • Retail experience is desired
  • Certified Pharmacy Technician
  • Iowa Registered Pharmacy Technician.
  • Read/Write/Speak fluent English
  • Technical aptitude
  • Mechanical aptitude
  • Basic Computer Skills using word, email, and web browser
  • Knowledge of Pharmaceutical technology
  • Knowledge of Medical Terminology
  • Use of usual and customary equipment used to perform essential functions of the position.
