Job description

Porter

We are seeking an experienced Porter for a community of 100 units in Bronx, NY. The Porter maintains a clean and safe environment for residents and staff by performing cleaning and some maintenance services for apartments, interior and exterior common areas, and associated amenities. This is an SEIU Local 32BJ Union position. 

Job Responsibilities

  • Perform general cleaning work in public areas and resident apartments such as dusting, sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, waxing and polishing floors, rugs, carpets, upholstered furniture, draperies, stairs, elevators and equipment.
  • Wash windows, woodwork, door panels, sills and walls in the lobby, stairways and halls.
  • Clean the compactor, compactor room and common area trash cans and all public areas.
  • Replace light bulbs, polish metalwork.
  • Report equipment failures to the Maintenance Superintendent.
  • Responsible for upkeep of grounds and abutting sidewalks/walkways of the property, water planters, and remove debris from the lawn areas.
  • Disinfect and sterilize equipment and supplies.
  • Stock cleaning cart with supplies.
  • Empty wastebaskets, and transport trash and waste to disposal area. Assist with transferring trash containers out of the buildings. Ensure that empty dumpsters are washed and disinfected.
  • Report potentially unsafe conditions or maintenance related issues promptly.
  • Operate small machinery necessary to carry out assigned tasks.
  • Clean boiler room, electrical room, and all storage areas.
  • Performs other custodial duties or other tasks as assigned.
  • Assist Superintendent in deep cleaning and small repairs.
  • Clean laundry room and machines regularly.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in care-taking and janitorial work.
  • High school diploma or GED is required.
  • Must have the ability to deal efficiently with tenants and the public; customer service orientation.
  • Ability to relate to and work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to stand, walk, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch, and use both hands.
  • Must be physically capable of lifting objects up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work outdoors during inclement weather.

Additional Details

Job Type: Full-time; 40 hours per week

Compensation: $17.60-$18.60 per hour per SEIU Local 32BJ Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

Schedule: Monday and Thursday 12pm-8:30pm (1/2 hour lunch); Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday 8am-4:30pm (1/2 hour lunch)
