Equipment Technician III positions are a lead position for staff performing small engine repair, adjustment of precision mowing equipment, and grinding/sharpening of reel mowers at multiple golf course sites; manage staff performing skilled repair, overhaul, and maintenance work on complex dissimilar mechanical and hydraulic equipment in water or sewage systems including pumps and piping systems, pressure regulators, backflow assemblies, globe, plug, gate valves and other types of valves; supervise backflow repair and replacement, backflow testing and meter testing; prepare reports and keep records; and perform other duties as assigned.
NOTES:
  • Employees in job classifications represented by AFSME Local 127 are scheduled to receive the following general wage increases:
    • 3.5% effective 7/1/27
    • 2% effective 7/1/28
    • 2% effective 1/1/29
  • In addition to the scheduled general wage increases, the following equity adjustment wage increase is also scheduled to take effect for Equipment Technician III:
    • 5% effective 1/1/29
  • Eligible benefited employees originally hired on or after July 10, 2021, will be automatically enrolled in the San Diego City Employees Retirement System (SDCERS).
  • Equipment Technician III employees who operate commercial vehicles are required by California State Law, as a condition of employment, to submit to drug and alcohol testing. Prior to hire, a background check will be completed in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse and with former employers regarding drug and alcohol testing results.
  • This recruitment may be used to fill future Equipment Technician III positions in other departments.
  • Equipment Technician III positions may be required to work nights, weekends, holidays, rotating and/or stand-by shifts for which they may receive 5% additional pay.
  • Equipment Technician III positions may be required to work in confined spaces and/or around raw sewage, lift and carry materials weighing up to 50 pounds, and spend long hours standing and kneeling.
  • Some Equipment Technician III positions may require a Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus Certification and/or a Confined Space Certificate within one year from the date of hire.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
You must meet the following requirements on the date you apply, unless otherwise indicated.
EXPERIENCE: Three years of full-time experience overhauling, repairing, and maintaining a variety of mechanical equipment such as water or parking meters, pumps, valves, air compressors, power tools, small gasoline or diesel engines, irrigation equipment, commercial ride on mowers, landscape and light construction equipment, shop equipment, and/or repairing and servicing safety equipment such as respirators, SCBAs, explosimeters, air lines, emergency mobile equipment, light meters, sound level meters, and/or firefighting equipment; or golf operations equipment to include, but not limited to, triplex and five-gang reel mowers, electrical and hydraulic systems, and gasoline and diesel engines.
NOTES:
  • Preventive maintenance work only, such as changing oil, lubing, or removing and replacing parts, is NOT qualifying.
  • Experience repairing power tools or sprinkler heads only is NOT qualifying.
  • City of San Diego employees using Out-of-Class Assignment (OCA) experience to qualify must submit written documentation signed by their appointing authority or payroll specialist, detailing the work performed, dates, and total number of qualifying OCA hours. OCA experience without the required documentation will NOT be considered.
LICENSE: A valid California Class C Driver License is required at the time of hire.
NOTE:
  • Some positions may require a valid California Class B Driver License within six months from the date of hire.
HIGHLY DESIRABLE:
  • Possession of a valid California Class A or B Driver License AND a valid California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) medical certificate dated within the last two years
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Excel.
  • Experience using asset management software to track equipment, inventory, work orders, maintenance, or repairs.
