What are 1099 projects?

A 1099 project refers to work performed by an independent contractor rather than a traditional employee. Individuals on 1099 projects are paid via IRS Form 1099, meaning they are responsible for their own taxes and don't receive typical employee benefits. These projects can range from short-term gigs to long-term contracts and are common in industries like IT, consulting, and creative services. Contractors have more control over how and when they work but must also handle their own expenses and tax obligations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a 1099 Project Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a 1099 Project Manager, you need strong project management expertise, relevant industry experience, and often a bachelor’s degree in a related field. Familiarity with project management tools like Asana, Trello, or Microsoft Project, as well as certifications such as PMP or Agile, are typically important. Exceptional communication, self-motivation, and time management skills help you work independently and coordinate with diverse clients. These skills ensure projects are completed on time, within scope, and to the satisfaction of clients in a contract-based work environment.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working on 1099 project-based contracts?

Working on 1099 project-based contracts often means managing multiple clients simultaneously, which can make time management and prioritization challenging. You'll also be responsible for handling your own taxes, invoicing, and sometimes sourcing new projects, since you are considered self-employed. Additionally, benefits such as health insurance and retirement plans are typically not provided, so it's important to plan accordingly. However, this structure offers flexibility and the opportunity to build a diverse portfolio.

We are seeking a Washington State licensed clinician to join our consulting team as an independent contractor (1099) to provide services to students ages 5 and older.

Position Overview

This project-based opportunity is ideal for a clinician who is passionate about supporting children, adolescents, and young adults while working within a collaborative, equity-focused environment. Services may be delivered both virtually and in person depending on project needs.

  • Commitment to social justice, equity, and liberation-focused practice.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to work independently while remaining connected to a team environment.
  • Experience with schools, youth-serving organizations, marginalized communities, or consultation work is preferred.

Position Details

  • Independent Contractor (1099)

  • Combination of remote and in-person opportunities based on project requirements
  • Competitive contract rates based on experience and scope of work

We encourage clinicians from historically marginalized communities and those with experience serving diverse populations to apply.
