Job description

CONTROLLER – INVENTORY-INTENSIVE DISTRIBUTION

A well-established, privately held company in the industrial distribution industry is seeking an experienced Controller to join its leadership team.

This is an excellent opportunity for a hands-on accounting leader with experience in an inventory-intensive distribution or industrial business. The ideal candidate understands inventory accounting, costing, gross margins, and the full accounting cycle and enjoys being involved in both the day-to-day operation and the bigger picture.

The company is financially stable with a very tenured team and a supportive work environment. The Controller will work closely with ownership and executive management and will provide leadership across accounting, finance, inventory, and key business support functions, including HR and IT oversight.

Industry Background

We are particularly interested in candidates with experience in inventory-intensive industrial distribution businesses, including:

  • PVF (pipe, valves and fittings)
  • Oilfield equipment or supplies
  • Industrial supplies
  • Construction or building materials
  • Electrical or utility products
  • Pipe, steel or metal products
  • Wholesale distribution or similar inventory-driven businesses

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead all accounting and financial operations, including month-end and year-end close.
  • Prepare monthly financial statements, management reports, profitability analysis, and other financial reporting.
  • Oversee budgeting, cash flow, forecasting, banking relationships, and borrowing base reporting.
  • Manage inventory accounting, inventory valuation, costing, gross margins, and inventory controls.
  • Oversee Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, payroll, and cash management.
  • Review customer and vendor credit terms, contracts, and financial agreements.
  • Coordinate annual audits and oversee tax and regulatory reporting.
  • Maintain strong internal controls and identify opportunities to improve accounting processes and efficiency.
  • Provide minimal HR oversight.
  • Oversee the company's ERP system and IT resources, coordinating with outside IT support as needed.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop accounting staff of two.
  • Partner with ownership and executive management on financial decisions, business planning, and special projects.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • CPA is a strong plus.
  • 10+ years of progressive accounting and financial management experience, including Controller-level responsibility.
  • Prior experience in an inventory-intensive distribution, industrial, or product-based business is highly preferred.
  • Strong hands-on experience with inventory accounting, costing, gross margins, financial reporting, and full-cycle accounting.
  • Experience working in a lean finance/accounting organization, with the ability to be both strategic and hands-on.
  • Experience with SAP or a comparable ERP system.
  • Strong Excel and Microsoft Office skills.
  • Hands-on, detail-oriented approach with the ability to work independently and make sound business decisions.
  • Strong leadership, communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.

Why Consider This Opportunity?

Join a financially stable, well-established company with a long-tenured team and a strong reputation in its industry. This is a hands-on leadership role where you will work closely with ownership and experienced executive leadership and have a meaningful impact on the company's financial operations and continued growth.

The company follows a 9/80 work schedule, giving employees every other Friday off, and offers competitive compensation, excellent benefits, and a strong bonus opportunity.

Company Description

Our goal is to partner with you in identifying the right next step in your career. We do this by leveraging industry knowledge, proven experience, strong relationships, and a commitment to delivering thoughtful, results-driven guidance throughout the process.
