Job description

Join a Close-Knit, Collaborative Team – Associate Attorney Opportunity in Columbus, OH!

Aspen Careers is partnering with a well-established Columbus law firm to identify an Associate Attorney for its growing practice. This is a unique opportunity for an attorney who enjoys courtroom experience, a fast-moving caseload, and working closely with a highly experienced legal team—without the pressure of billable-hour requirements.

The firm has built a longstanding practice representing consumer finance clients throughout Ohio and offers a supportive, team-oriented environment where attorneys and staff work collaboratively to move matters forward.

Job Title: Associate Attorney
Location: Columbus, OH

Why You Should Apply:

  • Gain regular courtroom experience handling collection litigation in municipal and common pleas courts throughout Ohio.
  • Work on matters from initial litigation through judgment and post-judgment proceedings, including garnishments.
  • Join a collaborative practice where cases are handled as a team rather than assigned in silos.
  • Work closely with an experienced group of paralegals and legal assistants who prepare much of the day-to-day case documentation.
  • Enjoy no billable-hour requirement or timesheet expectations.
  • Most hearings and pretrial matters are handled by phone or video, with physical court appearances generally occurring once or twice per week.
  • Develop practical courtroom skills without a trial-heavy practice—most matters resolve through settlement, default, or other pretrial resolution.
  • Potential for future equity or partnership consideration as you grow with the firm.
  • Work in a casual, approachable office environment where attorneys have significant autonomy over their schedules and time away.

The Ideal Candidate:

  • Ideally 1–4 years of attorney experience, although candidates outside that range may be considered.
  • Licensed to practice law in Ohio.
  • Litigation, creditors' rights, collections, consumer finance, or other courtroom experience is helpful but not required.
  • Comfortable appearing in court and traveling throughout Ohio when necessary.
  • Strong attention to detail when reviewing pleadings, court documents, balances, addresses, and other case information.
  • Able to thrive in a busy, high-volume practice and manage competing priorities.
  • Collaborative and willing to work closely with attorneys, paralegals, legal assistants, and administrative staff.
  • Open to learning established processes rather than needing to reinvent existing workflows.
  • Professional and respectful when communicating with opposing parties, including individuals representing themselves.
  • Self-directed and comfortable working in an environment where attorneys are trusted to manage their own time and responsibilities.

About the Firm:

  • Established Columbus law firm focused on consumer finance and collections litigation.
  • Represents lending clients in matters throughout all 88 Ohio counties.
  • Handles approximately 300–350 new files per month, with a substantial ongoing portfolio of active and post-judgment matters.
  • Supported by approximately 13 legal and administrative professionals, including paralegals, legal assistants, and file-support staff.
  • Known for a collaborative approach in which attorneys and staff take shared ownership of getting the work done.
  • Close-knit, diverse team with an emphasis on professionalism, respect, and treating everyone involved in a matter with dignity.
  • Casual office atmosphere outside of court appearances.
  • Stable and profitable practice with longstanding client relationships.

What's in it for You?

  • Competitive base salary, depending on experience.
  • SIMPLE IRA with a 3% dollar-for-dollar employer match.
  • Firm pays approximately 70% of the employee's health insurance premium and 50% of dependent/family premiums.
  • Optional dental and vision insurance.
  • Discretionary year-end bonuses based on individual contribution and firm performance.
  • Attorneys are given significant flexibility to manage their own vacation and personal time as long as responsibilities are covered.
  • Typical attorney schedule averages approximately 45–50 hours per week, with weekend work being rare.
  • No billable-hour requirement.
  • Potential opportunity for future equity or partnership consideration.
