What you will do:
The Johnson Controls Technology and Solutions Engineering Solutions Infrastructure (PI/P3) team provides pre-sales Building Automation System and project development engineering services for large complex building projects. We develop and deliver leading building, business and vertical market solutions and engineering expertise driving value for sales partners and customers for Performance Infrastructure (PI) and Public Private Partnership (P3) projects. The team brings a consultative and service-oriented approach, as well as engineering development discipline through standard processes and tools. Serving all of Johnson Controls' Solutions Infrastructure priority vertical markets and sales channels in North America, the Solutions Development Engineer position is an integral part of our digital growth strategy.
As a key member of the PI Solutions Development Engineering team, you will partner with some of the best minds in the industry to create innovative solutions focused on customers' needs. You will help deliver on aggressive growth objectives, driving higher product value and margin. Our high-performing team needs you to bring your expertise to complement and further differentiate our industry-leading offerings. The business supports Controls, Fire and Security projects. This position will focus on Controls within PI projects across North America. This is a virtual position but must live within the United States and Canada.
The Systems Development Engineer II supports the Solutions Infrastructure (PI/P3) sales team by assisting with pre and post sales activities on building systems and equipment project opportunities. Although the role is primarily weighted with BAS design, the ratio of pre and/or post sales activities will vary based on assigned projects, assigned Account Execs and customer expectations.
Pre-sales activities include, but are not limited to; system configuration validation, HVAC equipment and/or controls selection for basis of design as well as bidding, application and pricing. Jobsite inspections to determine existing conditions, identify potential equipment defects and evaluate equipment operability. This role will receive direction, coaching and support from a direct Sr. SDE Manager, assigned account executives, and sales leadership on pre-sale needs and expectations.
Post sales activities include equipment project execution that is profitable, accurate, on-time, within the scope of the contract and in alignment with customer expectations. Develops and provides detailed engineering information and submittals to communicate design, configuration, operating and installation requirements to customers, consultants, Johnson Controls service and necessary subcontractors. Works with assigned sales team to maintain an effective balance between customer satisfaction and project financial results when performing pre-sale and/or post sale duties.
How you will do it:
  • Administers the NA Technology and Solution Engineering project development process for projects across North America. Reinforces methodology and skills used to collect, analyze and present solutions, designs, scopes and cost estimates. Provides input to the sales management organization for opportunity prioritization, qualification and requirements for project development. Provides technical sales assistance to opportunities currently in the sales process. Coordinates pre-bid and pre-book estimate reviews and manages the project cost data through the booking process and release meeting.
  • Provides Johnson Controls Metasys along with other system application support and systems development for the Above Market Sales Channels. Uses available tools to assemble detailed applications for the customer contract, including the project development files associated with Selection Navigator, engineering designs, materials lists, and subcontractor bids as necessary.
  • Project responsibilities include pre-sales design support, cost development, applications engineering and product selection, specification interpretation and development, subcontractor RFP generation, subcontractor evaluation, proposal development and team coordination, project financial and execution risk management strategies, value engineering, customer satisfaction and project success.
  • Reviews solution application and cost of work estimates with salesperson and appropriate operations team to get mutual agreement on application. Develops consensus/buy-in from sales and operations teams before presentation to customer. Assists the sales team in communicating JCI's technical value proposition and presenting BAS solutions to the customer.
  • Provides scope definition and systems development direction for outside vendors and suppliers, mechanical and electrical subcontractors including scope, terms and conditions, bid forms, and contract reviews. Maintains relationships with key individuals to ensure preferred pricing where possible.
  • Assist in identifying specification issues or interpretation discrepancies and providing solutions to resolve. Develops control schematics, scope and cost estimate for system installation projects. Works with salesperson to develop understanding of customer requirements, critical areas and needs. Develops common orientation of job scope and details. Performs site-surveys in existing buildings to inspect overall operation of control systems and unique job considerations for construction.
  • Demonstrates ability to design BMS systems for design-build project applications. Develops specifications, control diagrams, and sequence of operations documentation for submission into project documents. Creates integration roadmap and BMS network architecture using Visio visualization software.
  • Interfaces with JCI OpenBlue Digital team to define integrated automation and cloud-based analytic software solutions. Participates in customer meetings to identify stakeholder needs and incorporate feedback into design. Participates in vendor coordination meetings to identify and mitigate scope overlaps/gaps. Supports JCI operations team during project turnover meetings and provides technical support during system installation phase.
  • Performs detailed engineering or cost impact analysis to quantify cost savings or other customer benefits. Assists in technical or financial benchmarking as needed.
  • Consults with sales and operations team to appropriately assess project financial and execution risk. Makes recommendations to sales team for cost effective solutions to mitigate any identified risk. Regularly updates sales and operations team on current and potential risks and recommends appropriate mitigation activities
  • Ensures the adherence to the Project Development process and use of standard tools and software.
  • Acts as a liaison between Sales and System Engineering team to assess the strengths and weaknesses of selected products and product applications.
  • Evaluates value-engineering options related to the Building Automation System associated with mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems.
  • Participates in turnover meetings with the assigned Project Manager. Ensures that the Project Manager understands the technical solutions sold. Provides all documentation and specification related details.
  • Provides technical support, selections and limited estimating support to Account Execs during project design or proposal phase. Assists as needed in developing the customer business case for the conceptual solution.
  • Supports detailed estimating of projects for Account Execs to finalize and present to clients. Validates assumptions made during proposal and development phase. Builds a detailed cost estimate and scope of work for assigned projects in conjunction with Sales. Assists in preparing proposals and other customer communication documents.
  • Prepares customer proposals and quote letters for assigned projects. Includes project takeoffs, specification review, special quote generation and RFQ and RFI issuance
  • Supports Account Execs' efforts to become basis of design through timely selections, specifications, sequences, drawings and review of documents as required.
  • Interprets engineering drawings and specifications in order to develop and provide engineered equipment submittals in compliance with; contract drawing, site coordination, and site installation requirements.
  • Follows standardized submittal generation guidelines for preparation and processing of equipment engineering submittals, including but not limited to; final coil selection, coil hand coordination, fan selection, chiller performance verification, chiller configuration and option selection so as to match schedule, drawing and specification requirements.
  • Evaluates the contractual scope of work to determine constructability.
  • Effectively communicates project progress, issues and financial status to management as required.
  • As required, visits customer sites to ensure delivery and receipt of critical equipment is in compliance with the expectations of Johnson Controls, the customer and the owner.
  • Ensures project documentation is compliant with contract requirements, Johnson Controls standards and the formal Johnson Controls equipment order execution process.
  • Periodically answers engineered equipment and controls application questions from potential customers and other sales channels.
  • Develops and maintains viable long-term relationships with customers, consultants, prime contractors and subcontractors. Attends job progress meetings as required.
  • Coordinates customer-training requirements with local Johnson Controls service.
  • Works with Customer Operations Associate to address any billing and collections issues, and to assure Johnson Controls receives payment in full.

What we look for:
Required
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or engineering technology.
  • Computer skills experience to include: Microsoft Office suite, (with emphasis on Word, Excel and Visio) Adobe Writer or Bluebeam, and basic Windows operating system environment.
  • AutoCad, experience is a plus.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Good organizational skills with attention to detail.
  • Interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with both internal and external customers.
  • Demonstrated ability to simultaneously manage a large and diverse number of projects with professionalism, cooperation, and persistence.
  • 5-7 years of related work experience, or minimum of 10 years related work experience in HVAC equipment, building automation controls or similar field.
  • Design, configure or modify existing or new Building Automation Systems by one or more of the following manufacturers such as Johnson Controls, Siemens, Automated Logic, Honeywell Tridium, Schneider Electric, Distech, etc.

HIRING SALARY RANGE: $90,000 to $134,000 (Salary to be determined by the education, experience,
knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, and alignment with market
data.) This role offers a competitive Bonus plan that will take into account individual, group,
