    Location
    New York
    Business Area
    Engineering and CTO
    Ref #
    10046074
    Description & Requirements
    Our Team
Bloomberg Application Services (BAS) is the core microservice framework powering the backend of virtually all Bloomberg products and services, responsible for reliably handling billions of dollars of transactions daily. The BAS network services over 6 million requests per second across thousands of applications and tens of thousands of machines on our global network. We provide a stable, fault-tolerant, scalable architecture with flexible routing rules and support for enterprise security and monitoring capabilities used by over 9,000 Bloomberg software engineers! We are a global group of software professionals composed of several teams, each focused on different aspects of BAS software development.
    The Role
You will be part of the BAS Enterprise team focused on the security and configuration of the BAS service mesh, which helps process ~400 million requests/minute across 80K+ machines. On top of this, the BAS Enterprise team manages critical infrastructure that routes requests between different trust zones in the service mesh that authenticates and authorizes ~2 million requests/minute. The solutions the team builds have company-wide impact, and are used by almost every engineer at Bloomberg.
Here are some of the ongoing and upcoming projects of the BAS Enterprise team:
    • Command and Control for the service mesh, improving the security and functionality of diagnostic and operational tooling
    • Improved integration with Bloomberg's internal cloud computing platform and open-source software such as Istio/Envoy to provide a better quality of service for BAS services running on cloud-native platforms.
    • Building tools to allow service providers and platform owners better visibility into the tuneables of the services they own or host

    We'll trust you to:
    • Have an eye for detail and an interest in working on the complex challenges of large-scale distributed systems.
    • Bring a strong understanding of working with highly multi-threaded and asynchronous programming environments
    • Stay updated on new technologies, particularly in the realms of network security, configuration management, and service meshes
    • Understand how to make changes to a live production system safely and responsibly, without causing any impact to our users
    • Communicate clearly and effectively and share our values toward software development and professional collaboration.

    You'll need to have:
    • 4+ years of total programming experience with at least 1+ year of relevant experience in C++
    • A Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, similar field of study or equivalent work experience
    • An understanding of object-oriented design, data structures, multi-threading, and algorithms
    • An aptitude for analytical problem solving
    • Experience with network security (such as mTLS) and/or experience in cloud architectures, Kubernetes, and service meshes

    We'd love to see:
    • Experience working on large, complex systems under continuous use
    • Experience in multi-threading and networking
    • Experience in Python
    • Exposure to multiple phases of the software development life-cycle

    What's in it for you:
The BAS team is associated with many of Bloomberg's collaborative efforts, with many of us involved in both internal and external technical communities, conferences and organizations. We also have relationships with many other infrastructure teams across Bloomberg and numerous open-source projects used at all levels of our software development and deployment stack.

    Salary Range = 160,000 - 240,000 USD Annual + Benefits + Bonus
The referenced salary range is based on the Company's good faith belief at the time of posting. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as geographic location, work experience, market conditions, education/training and skill level.
We offer one of the most comprehensive and generous benefits plans available and offer a range of total rewards that may include merit increases, incentive compensation (exempt roles only), paid holidays, paid time off, medical, dental, vision, short and long term disability benefits, 401(k) +match, life insurance, and various wellness programs, among others.
