Job description

What We're Looking For:

Barge Design Solutions is seeking a Traffic Specialist to support Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) through direct, on-site work. This position will assist GDOT staff in reviewing traffic control device permits, access management applications, and traffic engineering studies to ensure compliance with MUTCD standards and GDOT design policies. The ideal candidate will combine technical expertise with practical field experience to help maintain safe and efficient roadway operations across Georgia. This position will be an embedded employee at the GDOT District Traffic Operations office in either Jesup Georgia or Tennille Georgia.

Responsibilities

  • Traffic Control Device and Permit Review
  • Review signal and traffic control device permits, including traffic signals, pedestrian hybrid beacons (PHBs), rectangular rapid flashing beacons (RRFBs), and school zone flashers.
  • Review access management permits (driveway and encroachment permits) for design, safety, and operational compliance.
  • Coordinate with permit applicants, local jurisdictions, and internal GDOT reviewers as necessary to clarify submittal requirements and resolve discrepancies.
  • Evaluate speed limit change requests through field review, data analysis, and regulatory compliance
  • Public and Interagency Coordination
  • Respond to public inquiries, complaints, and concerns related to traffic operations, safety, and signal timing.
  • Participate in field investigations and prepare documentation summarizing findings and recommended corrective actions.
  • Assist GDOT staff with miscellaneous traffic operations or maintenance-related tasks as assigned.
  • For senior staff: provide training and mentorship to less experienced GDOT and consultant personnel on permitting, field review procedures, and compliance documentation.
  • Traffic Engineering and Design Support
  • Assist engineers in the field portions of traffic engineering studies, including data collection and site evaluations.
  • Perform traffic data review and validation (e.g., turning movement counts, volume, and speed data).
  • Support the development of traffic analyses (Synchro, HCS, VISSIM, or equivalent), including documentation of operational findings.
  • Contribute to drafting traffic study reports, including technical summaries, crash data findings, and improvement recommendations.
  • Assist in preparing traffic signal design plans, including field verification of existing equipment, intersection geometry, and utility locations.
  • Perform MicroStation drafting for signal plans, including phasing diagrams, detection layouts, pole/mast arm details, and power service notes.
  • Participate in design review and quality assurance activities to ensure constructability and adherence to GDOT standards.

Education & Experience Qualifications:

  • Two year degree in Engineering Technology, Computer Drafting, Surveying or equivalent with 10 years relevant experience, or other relevant combination of education and/ or experience.
  • Applies seasoned knowledge through progressive experience to resolve issues.
  • Provides resourcefulness and initiative to perform projects.
