The Lead Technician, BOP is part of the O&M Team, reporting to the Team Leader Solar O&M, and is responsible for the safe operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, documentation, and repair of utility-scale Solar PV facilities and associated substations located in Guayama, Puerto Rico.

The position supports plant reliability and performance by executing preventive, predictive, corrective, and emergency maintenance activities across solar generation assets, electrical collection systems, substations, high-voltage equipment, and Balance of Plant (BOP) components while ensuring compliance with all AES safety, environmental, and operational standards.

This role is based in Guayama, Puerto Rico, On-site

Essential Functions
  • Perform and support corrective, preventive, predictive, and emergency maintenance activities for utility-scale Solar PV facilities and associated substations.

  • Operate, inspect, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair plant equipment including but not limited to PV modules, trackers, combiner boxes, DC collection systems, AC collection systems, inverters (SMA, Hitachi), transformers, switchgear, breakers, and Balance of Plant (BOP) equipment.

  • Perform routine maintenance work including electrical repairs, instrumentation, calibration, testing, inspections, and inverter troubleshooting.

  • Prepare and implement switching orders, clearance orders, and lockout/tagout procedures for maintenance and operational activities.

  • Operate electrical and mechanical power plant systems to ensure safe and reliable facility performance.

  • Monitor equipment condition and identify deficiencies requiring corrective action.

  • Support troubleshooting of electrical, mechanical, instrumentation, protection, and control systems.

  • Assist in the maintenance of medium-voltage and high-voltage electrical equipment and associated infrastructure.

  • Coordinate and support maintenance activities performed by contractors and service providers.

  • Effectively schedule maintenance work activities and support outage planning and coordination.

  • Participate in root cause analysis activities and implementation of corrective actions to improve plant reliability and availability.

  • Responsible for predictive, preventive, and corrective maintenance activities associated with solar and substation assets.

  • Maintain accurate maintenance records, operational logs, inspection reports, and technical documentation.

  • Write and assist with Plant Orders, Plant Procedures, Operating Instructions, and other technical documents as assigned.

  • Ensure spare parts, tools, and equipment are available to safely perform assigned work.

  • Ensure all work is performed in compliance with AES safety standards, environmental requirements, operating procedures, and regulatory obligations.

  • Participate in technical, operational, and safety training programs as required.

  • Maintain good working relationships with contractors, suppliers, and key stakeholders.

  • Respond to or assist during emergency situations and plant restoration activities as required.

Educational and Skill Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required, with an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Maintenance, Power Generation, or a related technical field; or extensive High Voltage Electrical Maintenance experience.

  • Fluency in both English and Spanish is required

  • Valid Puerto Rico Driver's License required.

  • Experience in utility-scale solar operations, electrical maintenance, substations, power generation, or industrial electrical environments preferred.

  • Extensive experience maintaining medium-voltage and high-voltage electrical equipment, including substations, transformers, switchgear, breakers, protection systems, and associated electrical infrastructure.

  • Knowledge of solar PV systems including PV modules, trackers, combiner boxes, inverters, DC collection systems, and AC collection systems.

  • Must have thorough knowledge of NFPA 70E requirements regarding electrical safety and arc flash protection.

  • Proven ability to read and understand single-line diagrams, electrical schematics, protection drawings, instrumentation diagrams, and technical manuals.

  • Demonstrated ability to create and maintain a safe work environment.

  • Strong Safety Orientation and commitment to the AES Values and Culture.

  • Familiar with a proactive approach to Maintenance Management (CMMS) and knowledgeable in best practices related to predictive and preventive maintenance, Root Cause Analysis (RCA), and condition-based monitoring techniques.

  • Must be results-oriented, self-motivated, and able to work with limited direct supervision.

  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
