Job description

At Expedia Group, we help travelers explore the world, one journey at a time. As a global travel company powered by passionate people, trusted partnerships, and leading technology, we connect travelers, partners, and advertisers through our consumer brands, B2B network, and travel advertising business.

Here, you'll do meaningful work that helps millions of people discover, book, and experience travel with more ease, confidence, and joy. Our five Behaviors-Traveler First, Think Big, Operate with Excellence, Ownership Mindset, and Succeed Together-help foster a supportive environment where people can grow their careers and have the flexibility, benefits, and support to do their best work. Join us and build for travelers everywhere.

Introduction to Team

Our Technology Team partners with teams across Expedia Group to create innovative products, services, and tools to deliver high-quality experiences for travelers, partners, and our employees. A singular technology platform powered by data and machine learning provides secure, differentiated, and personalized experiences that drive loyalty and traveler satisfaction.

The Map Experience team which sits within our Technology division. The teams owns Expedia Group's provider-agnostic mapping platform - the libraries and services that render interactive maps across Brand Expedia, Hotels.com, and Vrbo, on both web and native. Our core library abstracts map providers like Google Maps behind a single unified API so that switching providers is a configuration change, not a rewrite. Maps sit on the critical shopping path (search results and property detail pages), so the work spans deep third-party SDK integration, front-end performance, server-driven UI, cross-platform shared logic, and rigorous experimentation.

In this role, you will:

  • Design and build high-performance, reusable React/TypeScript component libraries that abstract complex third-party mapping SDKs (Google Maps, Mapbox GL) behind clean, intuitive public APIs - enabling product teams to render maps without SDK-specific knowledge.
  • Own the full front-end experience: component architecture, event handling, state management, performance optimization (Core Web Vitals), accessibility, and iterative improvements based on real-user monitoring and experimentation.
  • Integrate deeply with Google Maps JS SDK and Mapbox GL to deliver advanced map features - markers, clustering, labels, polygons, routes, viewport control, 3D maps - while keeping the surface API simple and provider-agnostic.
  • Optimize front-end performance on critical shopping surfaces (search results, property detail pages): reduce Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) and Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS), reason about SSR vs. CSR, and implement server-driven UI patterns (GraphQL fragments, deferred queries).
  • Build and maintain design system integration - EGDS tokens, theming, accessibility (WCAG) - ensuring maps feel native to each brand (Expedia, Hotels.com, Vrbo).
  • Design and run A/B experiments using observability data (RUM, clickstream) to validate feature changes and drive product decisions.
  • Collaborate with product, design, and backend partners to translate requirements into component behavior and interaction patterns.
  • Provide technical leadership through code review, documentation, and mentorship on front-end architecture, component design, and testing best practices.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience in software development..

Several years of professional experience designing, implementing, and operating production software services or applications, including ownership of at least one significant service or feature area..

Proven ability to design and implement service-level architectures, including clear APIs, data models, and low-level designs that integrate with other services and systems..

Demonstrated proficiency in at least one modern programming language, along with experience in automated testing, CI/CD practices, and monitoring/alerting of production systems..

Preferred Qualifications:

Front-end / library engineering

  • Strong JavaScript and TypeScript, with experience designing reusable libraries or SDKs and clean public APIs (event-driven models, config-driven behavior).
  • React and modern component-library development (Storybook, design tokens, SCSS/CSS custom properties).
  • Hands-on integration with third-party mapping SDKs (Google Maps and/or Mapbox GL) or comparable deep integration with a complex external JS SDK.

Data & server-driven UI

  • GraphQL and Apollo, including fragments, deferred/suspense queries, and schema design.
  • Experience with server-driven UI architectures and the SSR/CSR performance tradeoffs that come with them.

Performance & experimentation

  • Demonstrable web-performance work (Core Web Vitals - LCP, CLS - profiling, and remediation).
  • Comfort designing A/B experiments and interpreting results using analytics and observability tooling (RUM, log search, notebooks/dashboards).

Cross-platform & geospatial (strongly preferred)

  • Kotlin, ideally Kotlin Multiplatform, for logic shared across web and native.
  • Working knowledge of geospatial concepts: coordinate systems, GeoJSON, polygons and polyline encoding, clustering, viewport/bounds math, and map projection quirks.

Engineering craft

  • Monorepo workflows (e.g., pnpm), CI/CD, artifact publishing, and disciplined dependency management.
  • Testing rigor: unit, end-to-end (Cypress or similar), and visual regression.
  • Accessibility fundamentals and a habit of building inclusively.
  • Ownership mindset: comfortable operating a service in production, on-call, and leading incident response.
The total cash range for this position in Austin is $146,000.00 to $204,500.00. Employees in this role have the potential to increase their pay up to $233,500.00, which is the top of the range, based on ongoing, demonstrated, and sustained performance in the role.

Starting pay for this role will vary based on multiple factors, including location, available budget, and an individual's knowledge, skills, and experience. Pay ranges may be modified in the future.
