What is a steelworker?

Steel workers, also known as structural iron and steel workers, are skilled tradespeople who fabricate, assemble, and install steel frameworks and structures for buildings, bridges, and other infrastructure projects. They work with steel beams, columns, and other materials, often at great heights, to ensure structures are safe and stable. Steel workers read blueprints, use a variety of tools, and collaborate with other construction professionals to complete projects according to design specifications.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a steelworker?

To thrive as a Steelworker, you need a solid understanding of metallurgy, blueprint reading, and fabrication techniques, often supported by a high school diploma and on-the-job training or apprenticeships. Familiarity with welding equipment, CNC machinery, and safety certifications like OSHA are commonly required. Attention to detail, teamwork, and strong problem-solving abilities are crucial soft skills in this role. These skills and qualities are important to ensure safe, precise, and efficient construction or manufacturing processes involving steel.

What are common challenges faced by steelworkers, and how can they be managed?

Steelworkers often encounter challenges such as working in physically demanding environments, exposure to high temperatures, and strict safety protocols. Managing these challenges involves adhering to rigorous safety measures, wearing appropriate protective gear, and participating in ongoing safety training. Teamwork and communication are also crucial, as many tasks require close coordination with colleagues to handle heavy machinery and materials safely and efficiently. Employers typically provide regular equipment maintenance and enforce safety standards to support worker well-being.

Job description

The Berlin Steel Construction Company is a full-service specialty contractor, primarily with structural steel and miscellaneous metals. We design, fabricate, and erect structures in the Northeast and in other parts of the country. We have 2 fabrication facilities, 4 erection operations facilities, and 6 office locations that provide engineering and management of projects. We are a 100% employee-owned company (ESOP) with a desire for growth. We service the private commercial, public, institutional, and industrial markets.
We are currently looking for a motivated Steel Detailer to join our growing team in our Johnston, RI office. This role is responsible for producing accurate fabrication and erection drawings for structural steel and miscellaneous metals, ensuring compliance with AISC standards and company detailing practices. This position plays a critical role in the success of our projects by translating contract documents into precise shop and field drawings.
This is a construction drafting position not an automotive detailing role.
Key Responsibilities
  • Create detailed shop drawings to be used to manufacture individual pieces of structural steel and/or miscellaneous metals.
  • Create detailed erection plans used by the Erector to assemble steel structures in the field.
  • Review contract documents, architectural, and structural drawings to generate piece details and framing plans.
  • Provide material lists (shop bolts, field bolts, mill orders, galvanized pieces, etc.).
  • Assist Project Managers in interpreting shop and field drawings.
  • Maintain a current working knowledge of AISC regulations, connection design, detailing practices, and steel member dimensions and properties.
  • Maintain knowledge of company detailing and connection standards.

Qualifications
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD and Microsoft Office products.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Experience with bridge projects or bridge steel detailing is a plus.
  • Experience in structural steel or construction detailing is strongly preferred.
