Job Summary

Uses computer to make label negatives, processes negatives onto aluminum, processes aluminum plates into single labels. We create label negatives with a program known as CorelDraw, which is similar to Adobe Illustrator and CAD drawing programs. Experience with any of these is value added for this position. Also performs other related tasks as assigned, some of which may become essential to the position.

Qualification Standards

Previous experience or training helpful, including sign making experience of any type. Must have ability to work with hands. Some lifting required. Basic computer skills such as word and excel are a requirement. Graphic layout and design experience value added in this position. Previous darkroom experience useful. Must be able to comprehend verbal and written information (in English). Must be able to recognize and avoid potential hazards, which are commonly present in the employee's work area. Must be able to hear warning signals and read and comprehend safety instructions, regulations and warnings.

Essential Job Tasks

  1. Work on computerized typesetter and process negatives and positives in the darkroom.
  2. Process aluminum and stainless steel plates using chemicals.
  3. Package labels.
  4. Read print drawings with the understanding of types of labels, sizes, and material requirements.
  5. Occasional shipboard installation of labels and color coding of hand wheels.
  6. Other tasks as may be assigned relevant to the trade.

Materials, Tools Equipment, Work Aids

Computer for phototype setting, metal engraving machinery, rulers, square, and various hand tools. Works with brass, plastic, phenolic, aluminum, and stainless steel. Personal protective equipment required.

Physical/Mental Involvement

Requires prolonged standing and sitting. Routinely lifts between 50 and 75 pounds. May be required to sit at a computer terminal for longs periods of time. Standing, balancing, walking, climbing ladders, reaching above shoulder or out in front, manual dexterity, pushing, pulling, kneeling, bending, seeing, and hearing. Occasionally works on board ships. Must be able to maintain general safety awareness and avoid hazards commonly present in employees work area.

Marginal Job Tasks

General housekeeping in work areas. May be required to attend safety, quality and/or process improvement meetings.

Environmental Factors

Exposure to fumes, odors, dust, gases, chemicals, solvents, various climates and temperatures, and low ventilation conditions, all of which can cause discomfort and/or respiratory difficulties. Exposure to constantly moving machines and mechanical parts and high levels of constant noise.

PAY SCALE $32.17- $33.52

This pay range is a reasonable estimate of the hourly range for this role. It takes into account the wide range of factors considered in making compensation decisions; including but not limited to skill sets, experience, training, and education.
