Job description


Position Overview:
The Muslim Life Advisor supports Muslim students and advances Muslim life at Butler University by fostering belonging, providing religious and spiritual guidance, and connecting students with campus and community resources. The Advisor develops experiential opportunities that deepen the campus community's understanding of Islamic beliefs, practices, cultures, and communities; supports outreach to prospective Muslim students and families; and contributes expertise and support to The Compass Center's interfaith programs. The Advisor brings knowledge, experience, and vision grounded in the diversity of Islamic traditions and communities and, under the direction of the Director, carries a defined portfolio aligned with Compass Center priorities and broader Culture & Inclusion and DEISA initiatives.
Position Description Key Responsibilities:
  • Muslim Student Support: Provide spiritual care, mentorship, and guidance grounded in Islamic traditions through regular drop-in hours and individual engagement with Butler's diverse Muslim student community.
  • Student Leadership and Community: Advise and support Muslim student leaders in planning prayer gatherings, study circles, religious observances, cultural events, and other community-building activities.
  • Campus Advocacy: Collaborate with campus partners to identify and address the religious, cultural, and institutional needs of Muslim students.
  • Campus Education: Develop experiential programs that deepen understanding of Islamic beliefs, practices, cultures, and communities across campus.
  • Prospective Student Outreach: Collaborate with The Compass Center, Admissions, and other University partners on year-round outreach to prospective and incoming Muslim students and families, including local, regional, and international recruitment efforts.
  • Compass Center and Interfaith Engagement: Serve as a campus resource on Islam, religious diversity, and interfaith engagement, and contribute to Compass Center initiatives.
  • Perform other duties as assigned in support of The Compass Center.

Required Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • At least two years of experience supporting college students or emerging adults in higher education, religious, or community-based settings.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Islamic beliefs, practices, cultures, and communities, including the diversity within Islam.
  • Ability to provide culturally responsive mentorship, spiritual care, and guidance to students.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and relationship-building skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, exercise sound judgment, center student needs, and work effectively across diverse perspectives.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in divinity, Islamic studies, religious studies, higher education, student affairs, counseling, or a related field.
  • Experience working in higher education, campus ministry, chaplaincy, or student affairs.
  • Experience with interfaith engagement, religious diversity, or diversity and inclusion initiatives.
  • Training or experience in Islamic spiritual care, chaplaincy, or religious leadership. Ordination or formal religious endorsement is not required.
  • Experience advising, mentoring, or coaching student leaders.
  • Established relationships with local or regional Muslim communities.
  • Experience with prospect
