What is a floral designer?

Floral designers, also known as florists, are professionals who create decorative arrangements using flowers, greenery, and other plant materials. They work with clients to design bouquets, centerpieces, wreaths, and other floral displays for a variety of occasions, such as weddings, funerals, and special events. Floral designers may work in flower shops, grocery stores, or event planning companies, and they are skilled in both the artistic and practical aspects of flower arrangement.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a floral designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Floral Designer, you need a solid understanding of floriculture, design principles, and basic horticultural knowledge, often supported by a certificate or relevant experience. Familiarity with floral design software, point-of-sale systems, and flower preservation tools is typically required. Creativity, attention to detail, customer service, and time management are essential soft skills that set top designers apart. These skills and qualifications ensure the ability to create visually appealing arrangements, satisfy client needs, and run an efficient floral business.

What are some typical challenges faced by florists working in a retail floral shop?

Florists in retail shops often face challenges such as managing time during busy periods (like holidays or wedding seasons), handling perishable inventory to minimize waste, and balancing creative work with customer service demands. It's also common to work collaboratively with team members to fulfill large or last-minute orders. Success in this role usually requires adaptability, excellent communication, and the ability to stay organized under pressure.

Job description

Bear Event Design is a creative event design and décor firm serving events across Denver and the Rocky Mountain region. Our work spans corporate events, experiential activations, weddings, social celebrations, and custom environments where high-impact design depends on thoughtful, hands-on execution.
We are seeking an experienced, creative, and entrepreneurial Floral Manager to lead, grow, and elevate Bear’s floral department. This role is responsible for shaping the creative direction of our floral work while also owning the processes, sales outreach, and team structure needed to make our Floral Department a stronger and more visible part of Bear’s overall business.
This is not simply a production florist role. While this person must have strong hands-on floral experience and be willing to jump in when needed, the long-term purpose of this position is to lead the floral department. Driving design quality, growing sales, building client confidence, team development, and operational excellence.
Your responsibilities:
  • Lead the creative direction of Bear’s floral department, developing floral concepts, recipes, installations, and offerings that are aligned with Bear’s design standards and meet the needs of our clients
  • Partner with Event Designers to strengthen floral proposals, improve how floral is presented to clients, and identify opportunities to expand floral scope within existing events
  • Drive floral sales growth through stronger proposal strategy, planner/vendor relationships, networking, and business development opportunities outside of Bear’s core sales channels
  • Support stronger floral proposals as Bear’s client-facing floral expert, participating in client meetings, vendor conversations, walkthroughs, networking events, and sales opportunities
  • Own overall department profitability in partnership with leadership, ensuring product, labor, hard goods, and waste are accurately estimated and managed
  • Oversee floral execution and systems from proposal through event completion, using strong hands-on floral knowledge to guide sourcing, stem selection, processing, staffing, inventory, quality control, and post-event review
  • Recruit, train, and mentor floral team members over time, building toward a structure that includes a full-time staff and a reliable group of freelance/contract floral support
  • Be willing to jump in when needed during busy periods or complex events

Who you are:
  • A creative floral leader with a refined design eye, strong understanding of luxury event floral, and the ability to shape floral work that feels elevated, intentional, and aligned with Bear’s overall event design
  • Growth-oriented and energized by the opportunity to build a department, expand floral sales, improve systems, and help clients understand the value of strong floral design
  • Confident in client-facing conversations, vendor relationships, networking environments, and creative sales opportunities where floral expertise can build trust and drive sales
  • Highly organized and proactive, able to manage multiple events, proposals, timelines, production needs, and department priorities without losing sight of the details
  • Hands-on, resourceful, and deeply knowledgeable about floral production realities, including seasonality, mechanics, materials, installation constraints, and timelines
  • A steady, collaborative leader who communicates clearly, gives direction, maintains quality standards, supports the team when needed

Requirements:
  • 5+ years of professional floral design experience, preferably with strong event, wedding, or large-scale installation experience
  • Proven ability to lead floral design for events from concept through execution
  • Strong knowledge of floral mechanics, seasonality, stem performance, sourcing, substitutions, processing, installations, and event-day logistics
  • Experience pricing floral recipes, labor, hard goods, freelance support, and installation needs accurately
  • Demonstrated ability to manage floral orders, vendor relationships, production timelines, and quality control
  • Experience leading, training, or managing floral team members, freelancers, or production support
  • Strong client communication skills and confidence participating in sales conversations, creative presentations, and vendor/planner relationships
  • Ability to work independently while managing priorities across sales, design, production, and department development
  • Comfortable with physical demands of event floral work, including lifting, standing for extended periods, warehouse/studio work, and occasional weekend or evening event needs
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation

Pay Range
$65,000 - $80,000 depending on experience
