How much do affordable housing jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 18, 2026, the average yearly pay for affordable housing in the United States is $64,590.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $45,500.00 and $83,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is affordable housing?

Affordable housing refers to residential units that are priced so that low- to moderate-income individuals or families can afford to live in them without spending an excessive portion of their income, typically no more than 30%. These homes can be provided by government programs, non-profit organizations, or private developers, often with subsidies or other assistance. The goal is to ensure that everyone has access to safe and decent housing, regardless of their financial situation.

What are affordable housing jobs?

Affordable housing jobs include a variety of positions related to renting and managing housing options for low income tenants. Someone in an affordable housing role may review applications, help manage a property, evaluate compliance with applicable regulations, or help determine a tenant's eligibility for a tax credit. Many affordable housing professionals work directly with tenants, but these positions are also available at banks or credit unions that specialize in underwriting contracts and loans. Some affordable housing professionals help process paperwork, maintain relationships with regulatory agencies, and provide advice to tenants.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in affordable housing roles, and why are they important?

To succeed in Affordable Housing roles, you need a solid understanding of housing regulations, property management, and financial analysis, often supported by a relevant degree or experience in real estate or urban planning. Familiarity with property management software, compliance tracking systems, and certifications like Certified Occupancy Specialist (COS) or Tax Credit Specialist (TCS) are commonly required. Strong communication, problem-solving abilities, and cultural sensitivity help build trust with diverse populations and navigate complex tenant situations. These skills ensure efficient management, compliance with legal standards, and the delivery of quality housing to those in need.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in affordable housing roles?

Professionals in affordable housing often encounter challenges such as navigating complex regulatory requirements, securing funding from multiple sources, and balancing the needs of diverse stakeholders including residents, government agencies, and developers. The role typically requires strong problem-solving skills and adaptability, as priorities can shift quickly based on policy changes or community needs. Additionally, collaboration with a multidisciplinary team—such as social workers, property managers, and local officials—is essential to successfully develop and maintain affordable housing projects.

What is the difference between Affordable Housing vs Housing Coordinator?
