Job description

Following the American School Counselor Association model, Ysleta Independent School District counselors provide for the academic, social/emotional, and career needs of each student through classroom guidance lessons, individual services, responsive services, and system support.  Additionally, counselors serve as part of the leadership team at each campus, collaborating with parents, faculty and staff. Adhere to federal, state laws and regulations, as well as, district policies regulations and procedures.
Essential Functions

 
  1. Assist and collaborate with the Department of Guidance and Counseling in the implementation of the district guidance and counseling plan, including the establishment of short and long term counseling goals.  Collect and submit counselor data at both the campus and Central Office.
  2. Plan, implement, and evaluate a balanced comprehensive developmental guidance program at each campus to serve all students, including special needs students.
  3. Coordinate ongoing drug awareness programs, assist in student achievement through individual and/or group counseling and participate in the development and implementation of in-service and public relations programs.
  4. Collect appropriate data on drop-outs, provide follow-up data on graduates and student referrals for counseling, General Education Homebound, and Special Education services.
  5. Collect and track the mandated student-volunteer hours (High School only).
  6. Assist the Testing Coordinator and Principal with the various mandated tests.
  7. Increase the number of students graduating from High School, prepared for post-secondary work (high school), and/or increase the number of students transitioning from one grade level to the next (all levels).
  8. Establish and assist in the vertical alignment of the counseling program PK-12.
  9. Establish and integrate a Social Emotional Learning (SEL) component at all YISD campuses.
  10. Document student audits, to include SPED, CTE, and ELL coding.  
  11. Collaborate with Central Office, campus administrators, other counselors, mental health and social agencies, parents and students in providing consistency and continuity in the guidance and counseling program.
  12. Participate in a minimum of four professional development trainings yearly as provided for and requested by the Department of Guidance and Counseling, to include Career Clusters/Career Pathways; Special Education (SPED), English Language Learners (ELL) and Gifted and Talented (G/T) yearly updates; counseling topics, such as bullying, abuse/neglect, suicide prevention and intervention, student audits/PGP maintenance and other cogent topics as needed.
  13. Proactively facilitate strategies on ADHD, classroom management, 504, and counselor/CIS roles/duties in collaboration with appropriate academic departments.
  14. Serve as part of the Campus Crisis Management Team/Emergency Operations Plan (EOP).
  15. Accept responsibility for personal improvement and professional growth.
  16. Attendance at the work site is required to meet essential functions of the job.
 
Other Responsibilities
 
  1. Participate in professional development activities as required by the district.
  2. Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties; support district/department goals.
  3. Maintain a professional code of ethics and perform other duties as assigned.
 
Qualifications
Master's degree; Texas School Counselor certification (Pre-K through 12); two (2) years of full-time creditable teaching experience (Pre-K through 12).  Knowledge of educational programs, demonstrated ability to work with students, parents and school personnel.  Texas/New Mexico driver's license, insurable by the district's auto liability insurance carrier.  Subject to district drug and alcohol testing policy and regulation.
Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors
Maintain emotional control under stress; ability to work with frequent interruptions; prolonged use of computers and occasional prolonged and irregular hours; occasional district-wide travel.
