Job Summary:

The Communication department is seeking applications for Adjunct Instructors for Basic Public Speaking. This course introduces students to the application of communication theory and practice to public speaking, with emphasis on audience analysis, speaker delivery, ethics of communication, and speech organizational techniques to develop students' speaking abilities.
The candidate would be expected to: teach 3 - 6 credits per semester, on-campus, between the hours of 8am - 5pm.


The Adjunct Instructor is directly accountable to the Associate Dean or Department Chair for the following duties and responsibilities.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide classroom instruction for Basic Public Speaking courses.
  • Provide classroom instruction between the hours of 8am - 5pm.
  • Fulfill contractual obligations during the term.
  • Conduct each class according to the approved syllabus.
  • Utilize the approved textbook and/or other instructional materials as approved.
  • Be fully prepared and on time.
  • Utilize LMS following University policies and procedures.
  • Maintain course grades in LMS and submit grades at the applicable times.
  • Support students by engaging them in class, answering questions in a timely manner, and referring them for additional support when necessary.
  • Be familiar with and abide by University policies.
  • Treat students and colleagues with respect and understanding of differences.
  • Assist in the development of curriculum as appropriate.
  • Complete annual mandatory compliance training.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the department supervisor.

Necessary Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Communication or a related field and a minimum of 18 graduate hours in speech, Oral Communications.
  • Experience teaching public speaking.
  • Demonstrated evidence of professional growth through participation in continuing education and other related activities.
  • Proficiency with teaching technologies.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • MA in Speech, Oral Communication, Oratory, Persuasion Forensics, or a master's degree in a related field and a minimum of 18 graduate hours in speech, Oral Communications.
  • Post-secondary teaching experience preferred.
  • Experience in student engagement techniques preferred.
