Supervisor: Athletic Director
Job Classification: Stipend
Summary: The role of Bandon High School's speech program is to help motivate students academically and to hone and practice reading, writing, speaking, and thinking skills. Teach students healthy, positive life skills in a fun, competitive and positive environment while providing strong leadership.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
All or some of the following tasks may be required. Other duties may be assigned.
  • Coach individual participants in the skills necessary for effective performance in speech, as individuals and as team members
  • Assists with research for student speeches
  • Performs individual coaching sessions, observes performances, and offers advice to students
  • Accompanies the team to meets
  • Instruct students, teaching basic skills involved in speech competition
  • Ensure the safety and security of the team before, during, and after meets
  • Communicate with the Athletic Director on progress/status/issues related to individuals/team
  • Stay informed on rules, procedures and judging standards for forensic events
  • Obtains necessary permission, insurance and school participation form and fees from students
  • Sets practice/behavior standards required for students to enter tournaments
  • Books tournament travel arrangements, including transportation and lodging
  • Promotes the program in the community through media engagement
  • Teaches students theories and skills underlying the various competition events
  • Conducts practices and drills to reinforce and assess skill development
  • Reads students' speeches and assess for coherent and convincing messages
  • Nurtures beginning students while challenging experienced students

Qualifications:
  • Knowledgeable in the techniques and strategies for speech competition
  • Background/experience in coaching of Speech or equivalent preferred
  • Demonstrated knowledge, interest in, and aptitude for performing the tasks listed
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of employment and student matters
  • Ability to perform duties with an awareness of all district requirements and board policies
  • Ability to effectively communicate, orally and in writing, with students, parents, staff and the community

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Salary and work year to be in accordance with the current stipend agreement.
