What is workplace design?

Workplace design is the process of planning and organizing the physical layout, furniture, technology, and overall environment of a work space to enhance productivity, well-being, and collaboration. It includes considerations such as ergonomics, lighting, acoustics, and the integration of spaces for different work styles, like private offices, open-plan areas, and collaborative zones. Effective workplace design not only supports employees’ needs but also reflects a company's culture and values.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a workplace designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Workplace Designer, you need expertise in interior design, space planning, and a solid understanding of building codes, typically supported by a degree in architecture, interior design, or a related field. Proficiency in CAD software, 3D modeling tools like Revit or SketchUp, and knowledge of sustainability certifications such as LEED are commonly required. Creativity, strong communication, and collaboration skills set outstanding designers apart when working with clients and diverse project teams. These skills are vital for creating functional, aesthetically pleasing, and innovative work environments that support organizational goals and employee wellbeing.

How does a workplace design professional typically collaborate with other departments during an office redesign project?

Workplace Design professionals regularly partner with HR, IT, and Facilities teams to ensure that office layouts support employee productivity, technology integration, and organizational culture. They facilitate workshops or meetings to gather input on team needs, coordinate with IT for seamless incorporation of tech infrastructure, and work closely with Facilities to manage logistics and compliance. Strong communication and project management skills are essential, as the role often involves aligning diverse stakeholder interests while adhering to project timelines and budgets.

Job description

Who We Are
Verkada is transforming how organizations protect their people and places with an integrated, privacy-sensitive AI-powered platform that includes solutions for video security, access control, air quality sensors, alarms, intercoms, and visitor management.
We've got serious momentum in the market: more than 30,000 customers (including 100+ of the Fortune 500), a $5.8B valuation, more than $1 billion in annualized bookings, and backing from CapitalG, Sequoia Capital, General Catalyst, Felicis Ventures, Next47 and more. Physical AI is one of the most consequential technology shifts of our time, and Verkada is at the center of it.
You can look at all kinds of communities to see our platform's impact in the world. It's the retailer that uses our agentic AI to deter theft before it happens. The warehouse that uses AI-powered alerts to make sure its team is protected on the floor with proper PPE. The school that's alerted to a threat in real-time and triggers a lockdown in seconds, not minutes. We're rapidly scaling this impact: today, more than 2 million Verkada devices are deployed across 170+ countries.
About the Role
The Workplace Development team is responsible for designing and delivering workplace environments that enable Verkada's continued global growth. As the Senior Manager Workplace Architect, you will lead the architectural planning, space design, and technical execution of Verkada's office and lab environments from concept through construction documentation.
In this highly technical, hands-on role, you'll own workplace programming, test fits, architectural drawing production, and cross-functional systems coordination while establishing scalable design standards across Verkada's real estate portfolio. You'll serve as the primary architectural resource for workplace projects, partnering closely with Designers, Project Managers, consultants, contractors, and internal stakeholders to deliver high-performance, thoughtfully designed spaces that support our business and employees.
This role reports to the Director of Workplace Development.
What You'll Do
  • Lead programming, test fits, space planning, and floor plan development for new offices, labs, and workplace renovations.
  • Produce and maintain complete architectural drawing sets, construction documents, and custom interior and millwork details using AutoCAD, Revit, or similar drafting software.
  • Establish and maintain Verkada's workplace design standards, CAD template libraries, and CAFM infrastructure to support a growing real estate portfolio.
  • Build and scale the Workplace Design function, including hiring, mentoring, and developing future Space and Occupancy Planning team members.
  • Serve as the primary architectural coordinator across Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing (MEP), IT, AV, low-voltage, and physical security disciplines to ensure seamless integration within workplace projects.
  • Conduct constructability reviews during design development to proactively identify conflicts and improve project execution before construction begins.
  • Partner closely with Designers, Project Managers, consultants, and general contractors throughout design and construction to maintain quality, schedule, and design intent.
  • Collaborate with business leaders to align workplace layouts with headcount forecasts, operational requirements, and future growth.
  • Develop efficient, scalable workplace planning strategies that maximize employee experience while supporting evolving business needs.
  • Ensure all workplace designs comply with applicable building codes, accessibility requirements, and Verkada's internal design standards.
What You Bring
  • Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Interior Architecture, or a related technical design field.
  • 5-8+ years of experience in commercial architecture, workplace design, or corporate interiors, with experience leading projects from concept through construction administration.
  • Expert proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit, or comparable architectural drafting software.
  • Strong understanding of commercial building systems, including MEP coordination, construction detailing, ADA requirements, and applicable building codes.
  • Experience producing comprehensive construction documentation and coordinating multidisciplinary consultant teams.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience managing projects, mentoring team members, or leading complex cross-functional initiatives.
  • Strong spatial planning skills with exceptional attention to detail and a passion for creating high-performing workplace environments.
  • Advanced proficiency with Google Workspace, particularly Google Sheets.
  • Experience with CAFM platforms, preferably OfficeSpace.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and project management skills with the ability to manage multiple concurrent projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience supporting workplace growth within a technology company or other high-growth organization is preferred.
