What is workplace design?

Workplace design is the process of planning and organizing the physical layout, furniture, technology, and overall environment of a work space to enhance productivity, well-being, and collaboration. It includes considerations such as ergonomics, lighting, acoustics, and the integration of spaces for different work styles, like private offices, open-plan areas, and collaborative zones. Effective workplace design not only supports employees’ needs but also reflects a company's culture and values.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a workplace designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Workplace Designer, you need expertise in interior design, space planning, and a solid understanding of building codes, typically supported by a degree in architecture, interior design, or a related field. Proficiency in CAD software, 3D modeling tools like Revit or SketchUp, and knowledge of sustainability certifications such as LEED are commonly required. Creativity, strong communication, and collaboration skills set outstanding designers apart when working with clients and diverse project teams. These skills are vital for creating functional, aesthetically pleasing, and innovative work environments that support organizational goals and employee wellbeing.

How does a workplace design professional typically collaborate with other departments during an office redesign project?

Workplace Design professionals regularly partner with HR, IT, and Facilities teams to ensure that office layouts support employee productivity, technology integration, and organizational culture. They facilitate workshops or meetings to gather input on team needs, coordinate with IT for seamless incorporation of tech infrastructure, and work closely with Facilities to manage logistics and compliance. Strong communication and project management skills are essential, as the role often involves aligning diverse stakeholder interests while adhering to project timelines and budgets.

  • Review and approve all furniture selections; maintain strong familiarity with furniture vendors and the dealer process.

  • Act as liaison between the project team and local leadership teams, managing project-based check-ins (visioning sessions, concept design, schematic design, design development).

  • Collect and incorporate local leadership feedback at each project stage into future design phases.

  • Work with the environmental graphic design (EGD) company to establish a project aesthetic for each site. Act as liaison between the project team and local leadership teams for EGD/brand project check-ins (visioning sessions, concept design, schematic design, and design development) and incorporate feedback as needed. Work with the EGD team to drive creativity and bespoke graphic design solutions for each project.

  • Drive consistency in environments that foster creativity and innovation, enabling people to do their best work.

  • Manage multiple simultaneous projects through all phases (including environmental graphics/brand design) with accuracy, timeliness, and consistent, concise communication with project managers and cross-functional, local, and regional teams.

  • Guide, support, and give feedback to help realize Netflix's design vision (architecture and brand); review and mark up construction and architectural details, brand-related drawings, and FFE/lighting specs to ensure design intent is properly coordinated.

  • Build and maintain relationships across internal teams to ensure feedback is captured throughout the design process;

  • Partner with the Workplace team on related design modifications.

  • Specify finishes/furniture as needed on small scale projects.

  • Stay current on design knowledge, processes, and philosophies, especially Inclusive Design, Sustainability Design, and AI applications.
