Sr. Underwriter, Staffing
Staffing Lines, established in 1998, is a national insurance program designed for the Temporary and Permanent Staffing Industry. Our current program offers Workers Compensation to Outplacement Firms, Executive Recruiting Firms, Temporary Staffing Firms and Permanent Placement Firms. Our newly launched Package Program will complement the established Workers Compensation Program and focus on 5 major occupational areas: office/clerical, industrial and light manufacturing, technical/professional, medical and sales and marketing. There is a great opportunity for us to leverage our relationship with the current Staffing Lines workforce to fulfill their package needs.
The Senior Workers' Compensation Underwriter with specialized experience within the staffing industry is responsible for evaluating, pricing, and structuring workers' compensation risks - including guaranteed cost (GC) placements and deductible options across staffing industries. The ideal candidate combines strong technical underwriting skills with deep knowledge of NCCI classification rules, staffing-specific exposures, and MGA/MGU program design.
Responsibilities:
- Evaluate new and renewal workers' compensation submissions for staffing agencies, analyzing loss history, experience modification factors, payroll/exposure data, and client-specific risk characteristics.
- Manage a book of business of staffing accounts, monitoring renewal retention, rate adequacy, and loss trends.
- Determine appropriate NCCI class codes for staffing placements across multiple end-client industries (manufacturing, food processing, warehousing, clerical, healthcare, etc.), applying "own premises" exclusions, temp-to-hire distinctions, and dual-wage/split-classification rules where applicable.
- Assess risk quality of staffing clients' safety programs, client vetting processes, and workplace injury/return-to-work practices.
- Make authoritative pricing, coverage, and program-structure decisions within delegated underwriting authority.
- Serve as a technical resource and mentor to junior underwriters, providing guidance on complex classification questions and program structuring.
- Partner with production/sales teams and retail/wholesale brokers to develop new business, respond to RFPs, and negotiate terms on accounts.
- Maintain accurate underwriting files and documentation to support audits, reinsurance reporting, and regulatory reviews.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in risk management or insurance majors a plus, or equivalent experience.
- 7+ years of workers' compensation underwriting experience, with experience underwriting staffing risks.
- Demonstrated expertise in NCCI classification rules as applied to temporary staffing placements, including multi-state classification nuances and independent bureau states (CA, NY, PA, NJ, WI, etc.).
- Hands-on experience underwriting and structuring guaranteed cost and deductible programs, including collateral analysis and program design.
- Strong analytical skills, including comfort working with loss runs, experience mod worksheets, and exposure/payroll data.
- Proven track record of managing a profitable book of business and meeting growth/retention targets.
- Strong verbal and written skills.
- Detail-oriented with demonstrated ability to self-direct, prioritize work, and meet deadlines.
- Up to 25% travel.
