What is the highest paying underwriting job?

Senior and executive-level underwriting roles, such as Chief Underwriting Officer or Vice President of Underwriting, tend to be the highest paying in the field. What does an Underwriter IV do?

An Underwriter IV is a senior-level professional responsible for evaluating and assessing the risks involved in insuring people or assets. They review applications for insurance, analyze financial data, and determine appropriate coverage amounts and premiums. At this level, Underwriter IVs often handle more complex or high-value cases, provide guidance to junior underwriters, and ensure compliance with company policies and regulations. They may also coordinate with agents, brokers, and clients to clarify information and explain decisions. Their expertise helps insurance companies manage risk and maintain profitability.

An Underwriter IV is a senior-level underwriting professional responsible for evaluating complex insurance or loan applications, assessing risk, and making approval decisions. This role typically requires extensive experience, strong analytical skills, and knowledge of underwriting guidelines and industry regulations.

Will AI replace underwriting?

AI is increasingly used in underwriting to automate data analysis and risk assessment, improving efficiency and consistency. However, underwriters still play a crucial role in interpreting complex information, making judgment calls, and managing exceptions that AI cannot fully handle. Therefore, AI is a tool that complements rather than replaces underwriters in the industry.

What are some common challenges faced by an Underwriter IV in managing complex portfolios?

As an Underwriter IV, you may frequently encounter complex portfolios that require balancing risk assessment with business objectives. One common challenge is evaluating intricate financial and legal documentation for large or unconventional accounts, where standard guidelines may not fully apply. Collaboration with senior management, actuaries, and legal teams is often necessary to navigate unique cases, ensure compliance, and tailor solutions for clients. Staying updated with industry trends and regulatory changes is also essential to make informed decisions and maintain portfolio profitability.

This role requires deep technical expertise, sound judgment, and strong partnership with the field.  If you thrive on complexity, and are known for your leadership and decision-making skills, we'd love to talk with you.

WHAT WE CAN OFFER YOU:

  • Estimated Salary: $86,000 - $114,000, plus annual bonus opportunity.

WHAT YOU'LL BRING:

  • Extensive individual life underwriting experience, including impaired risks and large case underwriting, with demonstrated success operating at full authority levels.
  • 5+ years of life underwriting experience, with the confidence and judgment to make and defend complex underwriting decisions using sound medical, financial, and actuarial reasoning.
  • Experience working under pressure while maintaining attention to detail, sound judgment, and compliance with company and industry standards.
  • Strong technical foundation, including completion of LOMA 280/281, 290, 311, 386, and ALU 101 & 201 (or equivalent depth of knowledge).
  • Excellent decision-making, analytical, and communication skills, with the ability to clearly explain underwriting outcomes to both internal partners and the field.
  • High level of independence and accountability, paired with strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to perform under deadline pressure.
  • You promote a culture of diversity and inclusion, value different ideas and opinions, and listen courageously, remaining curious in all that you do.
  • Able to work remotely with access to a high-speed internet connection and located in the United States or Puerto Rico.

PREFERRED:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience; FLMI, FALU, CLU designation completed or in progress.
  • Experience with Accelerated Underwriting programs and/or Long-Term Care underwriting.
  • Prior involvement in field training, underwriting policy development, or special underwriting initiatives.
