General Ledger Accountant
Reports to: Controller, Shared Services
Location: Hybrid (Arizona Residents Only) - Tucson, AZ
Employment Classification: Full-Time
Salary Range: $50,000-$75,000 annually, based on experience

Position Summary
AMS Impact Group is seeking a detail-oriented and analytical General Ledger Accountant to join our growing Finance team. This position is responsible for maintaining the integrity of the general ledger, preparing financial reports, supporting month-end and year-end close processes, and ensuring compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and organizational policies.
The General Ledger Accountant works collaboratively with Payroll, Accounts Payable, Grants, and Finance leadership to ensure accurate financial reporting and effective stewardship of organizational resources. The ideal candidate is highly organized, thrives in a collaborative environment, and is passionate about supporting a mission-driven organization dedicated to educational excellence.

AMS Impact Group is the management organization supporting Academies of Math and Science (AMS), a network of high-performing public charter schools serving nearly 10,000 students across Arizona and Arkansas. We also provide operational, financial, and strategic management services to educational organizations across the country, helping schools strengthen operations so they can focus on student achievement.
Key Responsibilities
General Ledger & Financial Reporting
  • Prepare and post accurate journal entries in accordance with GAAP and organizational policies.
  • Maintain the integrity of the general ledger and chart of accounts.
  • Complete month-end and year-end closing activities in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Reconcile balance sheet accounts, including cash, prepaid expenses, fixed assets, intercompany accounts, liabilities, and other assigned accounts.
  • Monitor and reconcile daily cash transactions and bank activity.
  • Prepare monthly financial reports for internal and external stakeholders.

Accounting Operations & Compliance
  • Maintain state financial reporting within eFinance.
  • Assist with annual financial statement audits and prepare supporting schedules.
  • Support federal and state compliance reporting, including Charter Board filings, IRS Form 990, and Single Audit requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with accounting policies, internal controls, and regulatory requirements.
  • Identify, investigate, and resolve accounting discrepancies.

Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Partner with Accounts Payable, Payroll, Grants, and Finance teams to ensure proper account coding and expense classification.
  • Assist with implementation and enhancement of accounting systems and financial processes.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives by developing and updating accounting procedures and internal controls.
  • Participate in special projects and perform additional duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
Education & Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required.
  • Minimum of four (4) years of progressively responsible accounting experience.
  • Experience preparing financial statements, reconciliations, and journal entries.
  • Experience supporting month-end and year-end close processes.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Strong knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Understanding of fund accounting principles; nonprofit or educational accounting experience preferred.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including PivotTables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, and financial analysis.
  • Experience utilizing ERP systems; Workday experience preferred.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple deadlines while working independently and collaboratively.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound professional judgment.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or active pursuit of CPA certification.
  • Experience working in nonprofit organizations, charter schools, or educational institutions.
  • Experience with Workday Financial Management.
  • Knowledge of state financial reporting requirements and grant accounting.
