Workday Report Developer information

What is a Workday Report Developer?

A Workday Report Developer is a professional who specializes in designing, developing, and maintaining reports within the Workday human capital management (HCM) and financial management software platform. They use Workday's reporting tools, such as Advanced, Matrix, and Composite Reports, to help organizations analyze HR and financial data, support decision-making, and ensure compliance. Workday Report Developers often collaborate with business stakeholders to gather requirements, customize reports, and troubleshoot reporting issues. Strong knowledge of Workday's data structure, reporting tools, and business processes is essential for this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Workday Report Developer?

To thrive as a Workday Report Developer, you need a solid understanding of HR systems, data analysis, and Workday’s core HCM modules, usually supported by experience in HRIS or reporting roles. Proficiency with Workday Report Writer, Advanced and Composite Reporting, and familiarity with calculated fields and Workday Studio are commonly required, with Workday certification being highly valued. Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help developers translate business needs into actionable reports and support users. These skills ensure accurate data delivery, support informed business decisions, and optimize HR processes within organizations.

What are the typical challenges faced by a Workday Report Developer when collaborating with functional teams?

A common challenge for Workday Report Developers is translating complex business requirements from functional teams into accurate and efficient Workday reports. Often, stakeholders may not be familiar with technical constraints, leading to gaps in communication. Developers must proactively clarify requirements, manage expectations around data availability, and ensure alignment on report outputs. Successful collaboration requires both technical expertise and strong interpersonal skills to bridge the gap between business needs and system capabilities.
