About the role:
The Preclinical Medicine Supervisor provides day-to-day leadership and operational oversight for the Preclinical Medical Associate team, supporting high-quality animal care, study execution and regulatory compliance within a preclinical research environment. This role is responsible for supervising staff, coordinating resources, supporting veterinary medical activities and ensuring compliance with applicable regulations, accreditation standards and internal procedures. The supervisor partners closely with veterinarians, research teams and cross-functional stakeholders to ensure operational excellence while fostering a collaborative, inclusive and development-focused workplace culture.

Your responsibilities will include:
  • Provide direct supervision and leadership for the Preclinical Medical Associate team, including full-time employees and contingent staff.
  • Lead recruitment activities in partnership with Human Resources, including workforce planning, interviewing, hiring recommendations, onboarding and training coordination.
  • Develop and coach direct reports through regular one-on-one meetings, performance feedback, individualized development plans, and formal written and verbal performance evaluations.
  • Apply corrective action and progressive discipline in accordance with company policy when appropriate.
  • Maintain accurate personnel records, including schedules, paid time off and leave tracking, ensuring timely updates in workforce management systems.
  • Foster an inclusive, respectful and engaged team environment that supports professional growth and organizational objectives.
  • Develop and manage departmental work schedules by assessing study priorities, workload demands and available resources to ensure appropriate staffing coverage.
  • Serve as the first-level escalation point for staffing challenges, operational issues and animal care concerns.
  • Monitor workload distribution and staffing utilization to support efficient and compliant operations.
  • Supervise, train and, as needed, actively participate in veterinary technical and clinical support activities.
  • Partner with veterinarians, veterinary assistants and study teams to support study-specific needs and special projects.
  • Ensure high standards of animal welfare, care delivery and technical execution.
  • Ensure staff complete required training, certifications and competency assessments in accordance with regulatory and organizational requirements.
  • Support cross-training and mentoring initiatives to increase team capability, flexibility and career development.
  • Lead or support onboarding and on-the-job training programs for new and existing staff.
  • Ensure departmental compliance with all applicable regulations and standards, including FDA, USDA, AAALAC, IACUC, the Animal Welfare Act and internal standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Support internal audits, external inspections and accreditation visits; assist with responses, corrective actions and corrective and preventive action (CAPA) activities, as needed.
  • Promote a strong culture of safety, quality and documentation accuracy.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvement and lead initiatives to enhance efficiency, quality and consistency.
  • Lead or support departmental projects, including training program enhancements, CAPA initiatives and the implementation or optimization of electronic medical record systems.
  • Develop staffing plans using operational metrics; prepare justifications for additional resources and coordinate approvals with leadership and Human Resources.
  • Support resource planning, including equipment needs and operational support requests.

Qualifications:
Required qualifications:
  • Associate degree or a minimum of 5 years' experience in a preclinical research or laboratory animal setting.
  • Minimum of 1 year' experience supervising or leading teams.
  • Ability to perform physical tasks associated with large-animal veterinary work.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.

Preferred qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field.
  • Certification as a Certified Manager of Animal Resources (CMAR) or completion of the Institute for Laboratory Animal Management (ILAM) coursework.
  • Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT) credential or laboratory animal certifications, including Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT), Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) or Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG).
  • Demonstrated interest in mentoring, teaching and staff development.
  • Experience with conflict management and employee relations.
  • Experience supporting regulatory inspections, audits or accreditation activities
