Summary of Job
The Caledonia Police Department is hiring for the position of Police Officer. We are looking to fill current openings and to establish a list for anticipated future vacancies. Now is a great time to join the Caledonia Police Department. Our new Public Safety Building is now finished and we are continuing to move forward with the hiring of 8 new officers that were approved in a referendum in April 2023. This will help us to be more effective in all that we do and provide greater community engagement.
If you are already a police officer but are looking for a change, consider a lateral move to Caledonia. Lateral Hiring: The Village may hire external certified experienced applicants and set initial compensation and vacation accrual at a higher step, not to exceed the applicant's actual prior years of full-time law enforcement service.
If you are enrolled in the police academy or completed it but have not yet been hired...look no further. We are also willing to hire and send exceptional candidates to the police academy.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
โ€ข Patrol assignments, as directed; โ€ข Enforcement of all applicable local/county ordinances, State Statutes and Federal laws through surveillance, investigation and/or arrest, as appropriate, including the issuance of tickets for violations; โ€ข Compliance with all policies and procedures of the department; โ€ข Respond and follow through on citizen complaints; โ€ข Traffic control measures for accidents, events, obstacles, incidents, crime scenes, and other activities, as needed; โ€ข Recognize, locate, obtain and secure evidence while preserving the chain of custody; โ€ข Prepare written reports and record maintenance, including daily log entries, daily activity sheets, incident investigations, arrests, and other records; โ€ข Participate in court case preparation, appearances and prosecution as required; โ€ข Provide first aid, residential and/or business security checks, crisis assistance, and other safety or security activities, as needed; โ€ข Maintain vehicles, tools and equipment, used in the performance of the position; โ€ข Serve as a positive community resource by establishing and maintaining working relationships with residents, businesses and visitors; โ€ข Provide public education information to residents, schools and groups, concerning public safety, as assigned; โ€ข Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Must comply with residency requirement (within thirty (30) miles of Fire Station #10, (within the State of Wisconsin) within (18) months of hire date)
  • Lateral Transfer:
    The Village may hire external certified experienced applicants and set initial compensation and vacation accrual at a higher step than the lowest rate, but such amounts shall not exceed the applicant's actual prior years of full-time law enforcement service or the existing schedule in the applicable current collective bargaining agreement.

  • Pay is reflective of the current bargaining agreement. The successor agreement is currently being negotiated.

Health, Dental and Vision Insurance:
Village of Caledonia contributes 85% of premium cost of Health insurance, 50% of premium costs for Dental family or single coverage for full-time employees and no contribution to Vision insurance (effective on the first of the month following a full calendar month of employment), subject to annual approval by the Village Board.
Holidays: 12 paid holidays per year
Vacation:
  • 40 hours after one year of service
  • 80 hours per year after two years of service
  • Following the completion of three full years, employees receive one (1) additional day of paid vacation per year, up to a maximum of twenty five days (200 hours).
Retirement Benefits:
Employees are eligible to participate in the Wisconsin Retirement System (WRS) upon hire and meeting WRS eligibility requirements.
  • Wisconsin Retirement System: WRS contribution rates are set annually by WRS, employee and employer contributions to this plan are required. 2021 rates are as follows:
    • Protective Employees: 11.75 Employer Contribution; 6.75 Employee Contribution
  • Deferred Compensation: Village of Caledonia currently makes available to its employees, on a voluntary basis, participation in a deferred compensation plan. Under this plan, each employee may, on a tax-deferred basis, contribute up to 15% (with a maximum annual contribution established by the IRS) of gross earnings. Village provides no contributions to this plan.

Life Insurance:
Village provides a basic term life insurance policy (subject to annual approval by the Village Board). The amount of term insurance provided depends upon the employee's annual salary.
Disability Insurance:
Short- and long-term disability coverage is available to employees through payroll deduction at the employee's cost.
Sick Leave: 1 day per month for each completed month of employment, with a maximum accrued carry-over of 160 days.
