PLEASE NOTE: Experienced certified law enforcement officers; law enforcement academy graduates eligible for certification as a law enforcement officer in the State of Wisconsin; or currently enrolled in a law enforcement academy are encouraged to apply. New employees that have continuous, full-time, sworn law enforcement experience may begin employment at a step in the range and vacation accrual that is commensurate with their years of experience serving in a sworn police officer position.
PURPOSE: Police Officers preserve public peace; protect life and property; work within the community to prevent crime and enforce the ordinances of the City of Brookfield and the laws of the State of Wisconsin.
Examples of Duties
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Safely carry, maintain, and operate issued firearms and other police equipment.
- Enforce the ordinances of the City of Brookfield and the laws of the State of Wisconsin.
- Respond to calls for service.
- Conduct investigations of suspicious persons or situations and preliminary investigation of major crimes and criminal activity; prepare investigative reports.
- Identify, detain, and process wanted individuals.
- Interview suspects and witnesses.
- Prepare for and testify in court as to the facts surrounding any criminal, departmental or civil action.
- Patrol the City of Brookfield in a police vehicle and/or on foot as directed.
- Prepare accurate and complete reports of daily activities.
- Provide assistance to the community in the areas of crime prevention.
- Enforce motor vehicle laws to promote safety and to reduce Accidents and expedite traffic flow.
- Attend in-service training as mandated by the State of Wisconsin or as directed.

Typical Qualifications
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: (Required at the time of application)
- Age 18 at time of application.
- Wisconsin Law requires United States Citizenship (66.0501 (1) Wis.Stats.).
- Valid Wisconsin driver's license at the time of background investigation and throughout employment.
- Pursuant to Law Enforcement Standards Board, an Associate Degree from a Wisconsin technical college system district or its accredited equivalent from another state, or a minimum of 60 college level credits from an accredited college or university.
- Physical Readiness Standards pursuant to Wisconsin Department of Justice-Training & Standards Bureau requires the following: 1) 1.5 mile run - 16.57 minutes; 2) 23 Push Ups; 3) Vertical Jump - 14 inches; 4) 300m run - 68 seconds; 5) 30 Sit Ups; 6) Agility Run - 19.5 seconds.

THE SALARY (2025-2026 The Brookfield Professional Police Association Union Contract Rates):
Beginning July 1, 2026 Salary Range: $37.82-$49.76 with annual increases based upon successful job performance. The City offers a generous benefit package, as negotiated with the Brookfield Professional Police Association. NOTE: New employees that have continuous, full-time, sworn law enforcement experience may begin employment at a step in the range and vacation accrual that is commensurate with their years of experience serving in a sworn police officer position.
THE SELECTION PROCESS
will be job-related and will consist of a written examination, oral examination and department ride along evaluation for selected candidates after the oral interview process. The Department of Human Resources reserves the right to invite only the most qualified candidates to the oral examinations. Candidates who successfully pass all selection tests, in addition to the background examination, and are offered employment will be required to take a medical examination, drug screen, and psychological examination as a condition of hire. Training academy designees will also be required to pass a physical agility test. Candidates must successfully complete all components of the selection process in order to be hired. Failing any component will be cause for removal from the selection process. The eligible list created as a result of this selection process may be supplemented with additional candidates and test iterations - you may test for this position once per year and your score will remain in effect for up to one year.

NOT the Wisconsin Personnel Partners exam.

Candidates who will be unavailable for one or more portions of the examination due to military service or training must provide written notification to the Human Resources Department within a reasonable period of time prior to the date of the examination component.
