What is a wine captain?

Wine Captains, also known as sommeliers, are hospitality professionals responsible for managing the wine service in fine dining restaurants or hotels. Their duties include curating wine lists, recommending wine pairings to guests, overseeing wine storage, and training staff on wine knowledge and service. Wine Captains play a crucial role in enhancing the dining experience by ensuring guests receive expert guidance and high-quality service related to wine selection and presentation.

How does a wine captain typically collaborate with chefs and servers to enhance the guest dining experience?

A Wine Captain works closely with both chefs and servers to ensure wine selections perfectly complement the menu and each guest’s preferences. They often coordinate with the chef to understand dish flavors and seasonal changes, allowing them to recommend ideal pairings. Additionally, they train servers on wine service and tasting notes, fostering a knowledgeable team that can confidently answer guest questions.
