What is a wine merchant?

A wine merchant is responsible for the purchase and sale of wine for a retail store or producer. In this job, your duties include managing inventory, filling out purchase orders, coordinating promotional events and sales at your store, and cultivating relationships with vintners, other merchants, and industry experts. You may also do a fair amount of travel in this career, visiting vineyards, wine tastings, and trade shows where you continue to build relationships for your store.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a wine merchant?

To thrive as a Wine Merchant, you need in-depth knowledge of wines, sales acumen, and often a background in hospitality or business. Familiarity with inventory management software, point-of-sale (POS) systems, and wine certification programs like WSET or Court of Master Sommeliers is common. Exceptional interpersonal skills, active listening, and a passion for educating customers help set top Wine Merchants apart. These abilities ensure effective product selection, customer satisfaction, and long-term business growth in a competitive market.

What are some common challenges faced by wine merchants when curating a diverse wine selection for clients?

Wine merchants often face the challenge of balancing customer preferences with offering a well-rounded and unique selection. Staying updated on global wine trends, sourcing limited allocations, and managing inventory for both popular and niche wines require strong market knowledge and supplier relationships. Additionally, wine merchants must navigate logistical concerns such as shipping regulations and storage conditions to maintain product quality. Success in this role often depends on building trust with clients through tailored recommendations and ongoing education.

How much do wine merchants make?

Wine merchants typically earn between $25,000 and $60,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and the size of their business. Salaries can increase with expertise in wine knowledge, sales skills, and certifications such as WSET or CMS. Many also earn commissions or bonuses based on sales performance.

Job description

Tribeca Wine Merchants is looking for a knowledgeable, enthusiastic wine professional to join our team in Tribeca. Since 2001, we have specialized in fine and rare wine, working with collectors and wine lovers while remaining very much a neighborhood wine shop.

This is a customer-facing sales role for someone who genuinely loves wine, enjoys talking about it, and can translate that knowledge into thoughtful recommendations without pretension. The ideal candidate is equally comfortable helping a longtime Burgundy collector and someone looking for a great $30 bottle for dinner.

Responsibilities

  • Engage with customers and provide thoughtful, personalized wine recommendations
  • Drive in-store sales and develop relationships with new and existing clients
  • Operate the POS and handle day-to-day retail transactions
  • Assist with merchandising, receiving, stocking and maintaining the sales floor
  • Help execute in-store tastings, dinners and other events
  • Learn and confidently discuss new arrivals, producers and regions
  • Support the team with occasional local deliveries and general store operations

Who We’re Looking For

  • Strong wine knowledge and genuine curiosity about fine wine
  • Previous wine retail, restaurant, hospitality or sales experience preferred
  • Warm, engaging and comfortable building relationships with customers
  • Reliable, organized and willing to pitch in wherever needed
  • Able to lift and move cases of wine
  • Weekend availability required, with some weekday/evening flexibility a plus
  • WSET, CMS or equivalent wine education is welcome but not required

Why TWM

We’re a small, highly collaborative team with access to extraordinary wines and producers from around the world. This is a particularly good opportunity for someone who wants to deepen their fine-wine knowledge while gaining hands-on experience with a sophisticated and engaged clientele.

Schedule: Part-time, approximately 15–25 hours per week. Saturdays and Sundays required.
Location: Tribeca, New York City
Compensation: Competitive hourly rate based on experience, plus employee wine benefits.

To apply, please send a résumé and a brief note telling us about your wine background and why you’d like to join Tribeca Wine Merchants.

Company Description

Since 2001, Tribeca Wine Merchants has been more than just a wine shop, we are a part of the fabric of lower Manhattan. Nestled in the heart of Tribeca, we are a proud member of our remarkable neighborhood, welcoming collectors, connoisseurs, and casual drinkers alike. Our philosophy is simple: we champion wines of character, integrity, and impeccable provenance, whether it’s an everyday bottle from an up-and-coming vigneron or one of the world’s most sought-after rarities.

From the beginning, we have been known as one of America’s foremost fine and rare wine merchants, with a deep-rooted specialization in Burgundy. Our unrivaled allocations of the great producers – from benchmarks like Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy & d’Auvenay to the new vanguard like Pierre Girardin, Boigey, and beyond – reflect decades of commitment, relationships, and passion for these extraordinary wines.
