What is a West Side nanny?

West Side Nannies are professional childcare providers who typically work for families living on the west side of a city, such as Los Angeles. They are responsible for the safety, well-being, and development of the children in their care, often handling daily routines, educational activities, and transportation. West Side Nannies may work full-time, part-time, or as live-in caregivers, and are often sought for their experience, references, and ability to provide personalized care. Agencies specializing in West Side placements frequently screen and match nannies with families based on specific needs and preferences.

What does a typical day look like for a West Side nanny, and how do they coordinate with parents and other household staff?

A typical day for a West Side Nanny often involves managing children's daily routines, preparing meals, assisting with homework, and organizing age-appropriate activities both at home and within the local community. Nannies frequently communicate with parents to update them on the children's progress and discuss any needs or concerns. Collaboration with other household staff, such as housekeepers or drivers, is also common, ensuring smooth household operations and coordinated schedules. Flexibility and excellent communication skills are essential, as needs may change throughout the day.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a West Side nanny, and why are they important?

To thrive as a West Side Nanny, you need experience in childcare, basic first aid/CPR certification, and a strong understanding of child development. Familiarity with child safety equipment, scheduling apps, and sometimes early childhood education tools is often required. Exceptional communication, patience, and reliability help nannies build trust with both children and parents. These skills ensure a safe, nurturing, and well-organized environment, which is crucial for supporting families in busy urban settings.

Job description

A kind family on the Upper West Side is seeking a part-time or full-time family assistant. The position has a flexible start date but ideally in place no later than December. The role is approximately 2 to 3 days per week, 12 to 20 hours per week, with room to grow into more hours for the right candidate who is open to some childcare or housekeeping for another family member in the same building. Ideal hours would be 10am to 6pm or 11am to 7pm, staying after the children eat dinner to help with cleanup.

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys creating and maintaining organization, staying ahead of household needs, and takes pride in a well functioning home so that both parents can maximize the time they spend with their children. The right candidate is a proactive self starter who anticipates what’s needed rather than waiting to be asked.

The family’s parents also live in the building and are looking for help a couple days a week with lighter housekeeping and meal prep. For the right candidate open to splitting time between both households, this could become a full-time role covering all 5 days in the same building.

Household Organization and Maintenance
• Maintain organization throughout the home, including closets, drawers, cabinets, play areas, and storage spaces
• Regularly organize children's toys, books, clothing, and household items
• Create and maintain systems that keep the home orderly and efficient
• Rotate seasonal clothing and assist with household decluttering projects as needed

Laundry and Light Housekeeping
• Wash, dry, fold, and put away household laundry
• Change bed linens as needed
• Perform light housekeeping tasks, including tidying common areas, wiping surfaces, loading/unloading the dishwasher, and keeping household spaces neat and presentable
• Coordinate with cleaning service if applicable

• Loading and unloading dishwasher

• Taking out the trash

Inventory Management
• Monitor household inventory and anticipate needs
• Keep track of groceries, paper goods, cleaning supplies, toiletries, and other household essentials
• Maintain organized household storage areas and ensure frequently used items are stocked

Shopping & Ordering
• Order groceries, household supplies, and home goods as needed
• Research and source products when replacements or new items are needed
• Coordinate deliveries and maintain household supply lists

• Help with meal prep

Errands
• Run occasional household errands, such as:
• Dry cleaning drop-off and pickup
• Prescription pickup
• Returns and exchanges
• Grocery shopping
• Other household-related tasks as needed

If the candidate would like additional hours, another family member in the same building would be looking for deep cleaning plus the above.

• Driving ideal but not required
• Trustworthy, dependable, and discreet
• Comfortable working independently and identifying tasks without constant supervision
• Pitch-in attitude and a proactive and positive personality

• Experience working in private homes in similar positions
• Highly organized and self-directed

•  Strong attention to detail
• Legally able to work in the US
• Must be child friendly as there are young children in the home. There is a full-time nanny for the majority of childcare

$35-40 per hour with benefits to be discussed depending on how many hours per week
